43. I suspect you mean .50 caliber. and not 50 mm.
It is nice to know what you are talking about when you write. It gives you credibility. A .50 caliber cartridge is a half inch in diameter. A 50 mm cartridge would almost two inches in diameter. Yes the .50 caliber can reach out to nearly two miles. The .50 caliber is legal but is another boogie man. The rifles chambered for this round, usually the .50 BMG, are normally used by civilians in marksman competition.

9. But-but-but they were for his personal protection!
After all, he might have to shoot an intruder, or shoot someone who was trying to hold up the local Burger King! He was just using them for target practice! He should be able to own as many guns as he wants, despite the fact that from all outward appearances, he had an anger problem at the very least.

His Second Amendment rights trumped the right of those officers to go home to their families, didn't they? :sarcasm:

28. no its not okay
we are just as sickened and disgusted by this act as any other sensible person...but we dont think that an incident like that should be used to erode away rights that are in our constitution

maybe if we banned guns in this country this wouldnt happen...maybe.....but then again maybe if we had a 1984 style society 9-11 wouldnt have happened either...but i think i'd be hard pressed to find many people here advocating for a broader, more intrusive patriot act

but all in all...this was a sick individual with a sick plan

21. Not necessarily, but an AK47 is by comparison to most hunting rifles "low powered"
I think it's a little funny and a lot sick how every "news" report finds it imperative to refer to any rifle as "high powered"...I can't think of a single report in the last 50 years of a "low powered" gun being used. I guess that doesn't gyrate the hormones of the gun grabbers.

27. yes
depending on what its in comparison too....low and high are all relative terms...dependent on another variable

a .223 is high powered when compared to a 22 lr.....but when compared to a 30-06 its low powered

35. Yes
Many will tell people looking for a home defense weapon that a small pistol in .22 .32 or even .380 is low powered. Many feel the that NATO 9 mm lacks sufficient stopping power.

30. If that is the weapon at hand
Yes, you do have the right to protect yourself with an ak47. It is not a hi powered rifle. It is compact and easy to handle. There is very little recoil and even a small woman can handle it. It is a little heavier than a defensive weapon needs to be though.

How many shots were fired in this incident? I would say probably less than 10. The fact that he owned an ak47 played no part in this shooting, he could have done it with any hunting rifle. The capacity of the rifle made no difference. The speed at which the rifle could be fired played no part in it. He chose his targets and fired deliberately.

More seriously, carbines like AR15s or semi-automatic AK-47 style weapons are useful in some self-defense situations. For example, in a home invasion with multiple perpetrators, a 16 inch AR15 would be my first choice.

26. Yes, my home...
and because my daughter had access to a large caliber handgun and the training and skill to use it, she was able to deter an intruder who was forcing open a sliding glass door.

Fortunately, all she had to do was point the revolver at the intruder. He decided to leave.

A burglar alarm and a 60 lb Black Lab failed to stop him, but the view of 98 pound 17 year old girl with a S&W 45acp revolver did the trick. I've had a .22 caliber revolver pointed at me and it looked amazingly large so I can understand how he felt.

While home invasion is not an everyday event, it does indeed happen.

* According to a United States Department of Justice report:
o 38% of assaults & 60% of rapes occur during home invasions.
o 1 of every 5 homes will experience a break-in or home invasion. That's over 2,000,000 homes!
* According to Statistics Canada, there has been an average of 289,200 home invasions annually over the last 5 years.
* Statistically, there are over 8,000 home invasions per day in North America
* According to Statistics U.S.A., there was an average of 3,600,000 home invasions annually between 1994 and 2000.

http://bumpkeywarning.com/HomeInvasionStatistics.htm

Statistically you will probably never have a home invasion. Statistically you will never get hit by lightning. But shit happens.

Note: I also know of two people who were knocked off their feet by a near lightning strike and my ex-wife got a feeder bolt through her arm when she was lowering her umbrella while entering her car. But then I lived in Tampa which claims to be the lightning capital of the world (falsely).

My mom's next door neighbors in what has always been considered a nice and safe area (where I grew up and in the 1950s there we didn't lock our doors. That is now unthinkable.)

I bought her a .38 revolver and taught her to use it safely...I hope she kills anybody trying to break into her house.
