Gun-data remarks exasperate Rep. Tiahrt, tells Atty. Gen. Holder read law
Gun-data remarks exasperate Tiahrt (The Wichita Eagle, Kansas)
Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Rep. Todd Tiahrt, R-Goddard, criticized U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder on Friday for telling Congress the Obama administration may try to relax some limits on sharing gun-trace data.

Tiahrt issued a statement saying Holder "should read the Tiahrt amendment before giving any further misleading comments about it."

Among other things, the law prohibits the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from disclosing gun-trace data to the public and requires that certain records submitted to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System be destroyed after 24 hours.

"Just as we protect the privacy of medical and financial records, we should also protect the privacy of law-abiding citizens who exercise their Second Amendment right to own a firearm," he said.

2. We do a piss poor job of protecting medical and financial records
If that's all the protection this clown wants for owners of firearms, he's setting the bar pretty low.

4. OK here's a quote for you right out of your post
"Just as we protect the privacy of medical and financial records, we should also protect the privacy of law-abiding citizens who exercise their Second Amendment right to own a firearm," he said.

He's just pandering to a bunch of paranoid people who spend their entire lives trembling in fear that Obama is gonna take their guns away.

I agree with him that we should protect the privacy of gun owners but we should protect everybody's privacy and we don't. Privacy unfortunately is pretty much a thing of the past here in the USA.

7. You said "If that's all the protection this clown wants for owners of firearms" and I asked you to
prove that assertion.

So far you have not proved it.

I can't explain my question any simpler than that.

If you can prove your claim, please do it.

10. Your financial records and medical records
have never been protected by more legislation than they currently are...ever. Disclosure of medical and financial records are as private as possible. Where/what are you talking about exactly.

8. Bloomberg has his republican pink panties in a wad...
He keeps screaming about "gun trace" and "Tiahrt Amendment' fact is, law enforcement has this info, but piss ant politicians DON"T and with good reason..

Now that vile rethug, Bloomberg, has Eric Holder as a sock puppet?!?!

During the investigation of the recent Virginia Tech incident, ATF provided the Virginia State Police (VSP) with trace information that allowed the VSP to determine where and from whom Seung-Hui Cho purchased the two handguns he used in the shootings. Firearms trace information was also used to solve a theft of 22 firearms from a security service in Atlanta that were subsequently purchased by an undercover police officer on the streets of New York.

ATF considers this information law-enforcement-sensitive because it is often the first investigative lead in a case. We treat it no differently than fingerprint matches and other crime-scene information, since disclosure outside of law enforcement can tip off criminals to the investigation, compromise cases and endanger the lives of undercover officers, witnesses and confidential sources.

This administration, needs to tell the Republicans to F.O....And stop carrying their water for them.

Heck, go look at trace data yourself...

9. Holder wants to go fishing! How cute!
The ATF already investigates trends in gun sales, hence the recent bust of a houston man- http://www.montgomerycountynews.net/index.php?module=article&view=422

And here I thought *'s efforts to track library books and credit card purchases was a symptom of republican authoritarianism. Little did I suspect we had the same kind of thinking in our own party. *sarcasm*
