Some people around here think, that guns, have next to no, regulation, they are very wrong, I have long thought about, how to clear up this misconception I, am going to post a few scenarios, to show, just how easy it is, for an honest person, to run afoul of gun laws, and in some of these cases, can do big time, Federal time for it.
Example 1:
You live in Fairfax VA, you want to go target shooting at a local range, a friend in Silver Springs Maryland wants to go along too, You drive to their house, and pick them up, and drive back to the range in Fairfax, to shoot, and afterwords, you drive them home, all the while, you have your .22 in a case, in the trunk of your car...
If you do that, you are breaking MULTIPLE LAWS, in two jurisdictions....
Example 2:
You live in “ANY STATE”, you have an “out of state” family member over, your family member, wants to purchase a pistol that you have had, you KNOW, your family member has never been in any kind of trouble with the law, you also know that this family member, own several other firearms, and even happens to be a reserve deputy sheriff in his home state. You go ahead and sell him the pistol...
Congratulations!! You and Him, just committed a FEDRAL FELONY, the moment, he crosses the state line with the pistol...
Example 3:
You live in rural Illinois, you have your FOID card, and own a shotgun that you keep in a case in the living room, one day, a new neighbor comes over to visit and introduce themselves. In conversation, they talk about moving to town, from out-of-state, and how much they like the community, they notice your shotgun the case, and ask you about it. You are proud of the gun, and without hesitation, you get up from you seat, unlock the case, double check it to make certain that it is unloaded, and hand it too your new neighbor to look at. The neighbor looks it over, checks the action, comments on how nice the wood work is, and hands it back to you, and you lock it back in the case....
Congratulations!! You, and he, just broke the law in Illinois!!!! It is illegal to even TOUCH a gun in Illinois without a FOID card..
Example 4:
You live in rural Virginia, you are sitting on your front porch, in your rocking chair, pondering the recent break-up of you and your spouse. It was an ugly, emotional break up, made worse, by it being recent, and the meddling of her parents. As you sit in your rocking chair, one of your “in-laws” drive by slowly, and you hear them loling at you sitting on the porch, they stop the car, and yell something at you out the window, in a moment of anger, you yell back. “Keep it up, I am going to send you all to HELL!” will pointing at them with your finger.. They speed off, your still sitting in the chair, hurt, and upset...
Congratulations!! Because of the family relation, you just made a threat to your in-law, this is Domestic Violence in Virginia, if the nosy woman next door heard it, and can back up their story in court about you saying that, and your convicted of making that statement, you will loose lifetime rights to own any gun.. And you never even left the chair.....
Example 5:
You are a vet, with a spotlessly clean record,
You loan a semi-automatic rifle to a friend, and during a recent trip to the range, with the rifle, it malfunctions, and fires a few shots automatic, the friend, immediately puts the rifle up, but someone at the range hears it, and reports “Machine gun fire” the ATF gets involved, you suddenly find yourself, in trouble, because YOU PROVIDED the rifle, to your friend.. IT does not matter that the “event” cannot be repeated by the ATF, with the rifle, and that the manufacture, admits, that that modal can malfunction in that way if not properly maintained, and even goes to court for you...
You can be convicted of several federal firearms violations, and find yourself doing hard time, This is happening to one man right now, he is in prison.
There are many, many, ways to inadvertently “run afoul” of the law. It is a terrible falsehood that there is “little to no” gun control laws in America...
