3. If you know what you are looking for just google the gun
There are so many gun sites I couldn't begin. Is price the most important Quality? Looks? I mean hell, you can pick up a new Remington 870 for a few hundred dollars, or you can spend many thousands on a a custom, hand engraved Italian job. Simply not enough information.

Shotgun world http://www.shotgunworld.com/ is a good place to start as I'm assuming you don't want a 308 for bird hunting.

Hell, if you are really feeling frisky, you could build your own smoothbore flintlock from a kit by Track of the wolf.

4. Depending on the type of bird... you're best bet is a 12ga or 20ga.

Look to buy from someone semi-local in your own state, then you don't have to pay FFL transfer or shipping fees.
If you're looking to bird-hunt, look for a barrel with interchangeable chokes.

I'm guessing you're looking to shop frugal, but don't want to buy shit... hence your question in the OP.
Your cheapest top quality option would be a lightly used Mossberg 500 or Remington 870. Both pump action, $200-$300
If you're looking for a double barrel Remington, Stoeger, and Mossberg make decent entry level guns for around $400.
Finally, for semi-auto, Remington 1100's are nice for the money. Around $400.

If money's not a big concern to you, a Tromix S17 Saiga 12ga shotgun is pretty friggin' badass.

6. $200's not a bad price at all - even if only in decent shape.
If it's a Mossberg, it will likely be a 500 (or 500A) but may be a 590 or Defender Series.

9. Yup. That's a Title 2 restricted barrel length, though...
i.e., you have to get Federal authorization (BATFE Form 4) to own a shotgun with a barrel less than 18".

Saiga 12's (with Title 1 civilian-length barrels) are very popular. And pricey. Saw a few at the gun show this weekend.

15. Not only is that a NFA weapon,
but it would be a very bad choice for bird hunting because of the barrel length and lack of any kind of choke.

16. It's a common misconception that shorter length barrels have terrible spreads.
You have to get about 9" or less before you appreciably hurt your shot spread. Shooting a 10"-12" SPS (like posted) would be roughtly the same as shooting an open-choke regular barrel. Sure, it won't behave like a choked shotgun... but it wouldn't be too bad to hunt with either.

11. www.budsgunshop.com
It's a great place to buy guns because they include the price of shipping right into the cost of the firearm. I just got a International Arms (Norinco) Hawk 12 gauge pump action shotgun from there, and even after the transfer fee I spent less than at the stores around here. I highly recommend them :)

12. I can't believe no one has mentioned them.
The two preeminent gun sale/auction sites are:

www.gunsamerica.com
www.gunbroker.com

Guns America is a firearm selling site. Gunbroker is an auction site.

If you search the closed auctions on Gunbroker you will get an excellent idea of what the current market value is for firearms.

13. CZ makes an elegant and classic double
Edited on Fri Nov-20-09 08:48 AM by one-eyed fat man

A brisk fall afternoon, a couple of close-working pointers and one of these quick-handling doubles in 28 gauge beats the hell out listening to gun-hating twits whining about evil black rifles.

Then later just to crush their Mario Cuomo-esque image of “hunters who drink beer, don’t vote and lie to their wives,” have a little Chardonnay with this recipe. They can keep their tofu, lattes and hairy-legged women.

Ingredients:

6 large portobello mushrooms
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 medium yellow onion -- peeled and finely chopped
10 sprigs fresh thyme
6 quail
salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/3 cup balsamic vinegar

Directions:
Trim mushrooms and wipe clean with a damp dish towel. Remove stems and chop enough to make 1 cup, discarding the rest. Heat 1/4 cup oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add mushroom caps and cook, turning once, until golden, about 3 minutes per side. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

Reduce heat to low and add another 2 tablespoon oil to skillet. Add onions, chopped mushroom stems, and 3 sprigs thyme, and cook until onions are soft, stirring occasionally, about 20 minutes. Return mushroom caps to skillet.

Meanwhile, coat another skillet with remaining oil and heat over medium heat. Rinse quail, pat dry, and season inside and out with salt and pepper. Cook, browning on all sides, for 18-20 minutes.

Transfer quail to onion-mushroom mixture, placing 1 quail on top of each mushroom cap.

For the sauce, deglaze quail skillet with vinegar and 1/4 cup water, scraping bits from bottom of skillet. Pour sauce around quail, then increase heat to medium and cook just until mushroom caps are warmed through and sauce is slightly thickened, 1-3 minutes. Garnish with remaining thyme and serve from skillet.
