Two dead, one wounded in Westford, MA, domestic shooting incident

DA to detail Westford shooting that left two dead, one wounded

Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr. and Westford police chief Thomas
McEnaney today will provide new details of the "family dispute'' in Westford that
left two people dead, and a third hospitalized.

Police were called to a house on Makepeace Road Monday night. The survivor was
flown by medical helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester with
life-threatening injuries, police said.

“It appears to be a family member scenario,” Westford police Captain Joseph Roy,
in a phone interview on Monday.

Roy said police were still notifying family members, and he would not release
details about the victims.

Police said the shooting, in an upscale suburb northwest of Boston, is eerily similar
to the Jan. 9 attempted domestic murder-suicide in which Frederick Leduc allegedly
shot and killed his wife, Karen, 43, before turning the gun on himself. Karen Leduc
died the next day. Frederick Leduc survived and is facing murder charges.

2. How tragically awful for you to have to see it again; it was just on the Boston TV news.

They were explaining to us how he was just a perfectly normal, quiet
guy and no one can understand why he did this.

6. But but but.. this is Massachusetts!
They have all kinds of authoritarian gun control.. this just can't be! You mean that gun control doesn't actually stop people from doing horrible things with guns?!? *gasp* Ban the guns! Then nobody will kill each other.. *

(That was the response you were fishing for, right?)

* Except for the related story listed in the article where a co-ed was stabbed to death by her boyfriend who then both stabbed and shot himself.

10. "Normal, but quiet" in the news actually means:
Nobody knew hime well enough to say anything. Very few of us really knows what happens inside our neighbor's homes. Often severe abuse is hidden from others. In domestic murders there is almost always a history of violence, often hidden, the builds up to the murder.

12. So, how is the murder rate over the last 10-15 years? Up or down? nt

17. No correlation was implied -- and you knew that. So,
what is the purpose posting it again? You are welcome to try any correlation you wish, even the one you think I might have imagined.

Of course, it will be critiqued.

21. Well why don't you explain your implication then since your reply made no explicit point. (NT)

22. Again, not my implication(s). But you seem to have one...
Perhaps you may wish to place this (repeated) anecdotal incident in the context of the overall crime rate. Perhaps that would clear things up.

Why do you wish for everyone to read about this issue again? What is constructive or enlightening about it? What are you implying?

18. Actually, I just prefer to have the discussion (such as it is) in one place
Surely, in your book, the fact that I'm a gun owner and a CCW permit holder means I have no compassion, so how could I be bothered by having to hear about this again?

More seriously, I worked for the UN war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for 3+ years. I've dealt with worse.

And as GreenStormCloud pointed out above, when the news media report that neighbors said the killer was a "perfectly normal, quiet guy" it actually means nobody knew anything about him, or insofar as anyone harbored suspicions, they don't want to own up to not having acted on them before somebody ended up in a body bag. God, it's such a fucking cliche; "quiet guy, kept to himself, seemed normal enough, never bothered the neighbors" etc. Wasn't that what they said about Jeffrey Dahmer too?

5. Thanks Dave for defending your preferred method of homicide...
A bullet through the eye is so much more humane.

16. Take this quiz to see how well you know Massachusetts gun laws
http://crime.about.com/library/blgunquiz_ma.htm

I got 10 out of 10 right.

Here's my bonus question:

Does Massachusetts state law require firearms, including antiques, to be stored either in a locked container or fitted with a trigger lock?
