GUNS IN THE NEWS--January 19, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er or violations of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

4. Officer Mistakes Cat for Lion (CA)
http://www.dailybulletin.com/Stories/0,1413,203~21481~1896512,00.html#

REDLANDS - A police officer shot and killed a neighborhood cat he thought was a mountain lion Thursday after two cougar sightings were reported in the same area over the last eight days.

Animal control officers were sent to a home in the 1500 block of Crestview Road about 11:30 a.m. They were met by a police officer who emerged from a home carrying an AR-15 assault rifle.

The officer told Redlands Animal Control Supervisor Gayle Lipes he had shot the cat, which he described to her as very large and resembling a wild animal.

"Why the hell did you shoot it before we got here?" Lipes asked.

*snip/end*

I don't know whether to laugh or cry about this. I wonder of the F&G people would have been so "understanding" if it was a homeowner that made the mistake.

11. Teen Accidentally Killed By Father While Hunting (FL)
"A 14-year-old boy Jacksonville boy was shot and killed by his father Saturday morning in what the Baker County sheriff called a tragic hunting accident.
Dennis Plucknett was on a weekend trip in a hunting camp near the Georgia state line with his two sons, 14-year-old Alex and 17-year-old Jonathan.
Investigators said that about 9:30 a.m., Plucknett asked his older son to see if he could see an animal moving in the woods. He couldn't, so he handed the .308 rifle to his dad. Thinking it was a hog, Plucknet fired one shot, hitting his son in the back of the head. "

20. Fort Lauderdale man recovering after being shot by police officers
"A Fort Lauderdale man was in fair condition at Broward General Medical Center on Sunday, wounded by police when he refused to drop the gun he brandished.
Police were called to the 800 block of Southwest 27th Street about 9:20 p.m. Saturday, where they said they found Tim Retcher, 42, drunk and carrying the gun.
A woman who lived at the house "informed the officers he had been drinking and had been causing a disturbance," said Sgt. Alfred Lewers, Jr., a Fort Lauderdale public information officer.
Two officers arrived and told Retcher to drop the gun. "He refused, and started telling them that he would have to kill them, that they would have to take him out," Lewers said."

"A 15-year-old boy accused of executing his boyhood friend in an alley goes on trial for murder this week in Marion Superior Court.
Jury selection begins Tuesday morning in the trial of Keith Munden, the youth accused of gunning down 14-year-old William Anthony Boicourt on Jan. 2, 2003, over a drug debt.
Munden, prosecutors say, fired four .30-caliber rifle shots into Anthony and left his body in an alley in the 400 block of East Parkway Avenue.
During a trial in August, Munden's accomplice, Nicholas Harritt, admitted providing the gun, car and cell phone used in the ambush and slaying."
