Mentally Ill Home Invader Fatally Shot After Stabbing Elderly Couple To Death.
This story needed to be posted so I could fulfill my obligation to award it one pro-gun point:

1. sharp and pointy objects have absolutely no
need to be in civilian hands, they were designed to kill and that is their only purpose. They are not even an individual right guaranteed by the constitution!!

3. And if I acted puerile and started posting every stabbing?
face it the vast and overwhelming use of firearms are in non violent activities just like knifes.

Now you pro-knife nuts know that admitting to that factual reality would expose a bit of your personal irrationality about firearms.

6. Then you'd be acting like most of the pro-gun people here.
Look at the Latest topics sometime. Often 20 or 30% of the posts are "Man uses gun to save granny." It not only shows us that the posters are stupid enough to draw generalizations from anecdotal data; it pollutes DU for everyone.

9. Ummm....
...what do you call the garbage that gets posted form the "other side" of the argument? Do you feel the same about them, or are you only willing to condemn those who post anecdotal data that doesn't support your position?

No... No they are not. I just checked, it works out to about 6%

Anyway, I do not ignore either of these types of stories that occur across our entire nation. When they are all added up, they are no longer anecdotal. If you add up all of the stories, you will still find that the vast majority of people using firearms in this country are using them in a completely legal and legitimate fashion that far outweighs their illegal or misuse.

15. That's rich. Really rich.
Just look at the flurry of jpak threads on any given day and come back and tell everyone about "anecdotal data."

7. I couldn't agree with you less. Knives are personal and require a commitment to personal combat.
Someone stepping off a bus and opening fire should make this distinction abundantly clear.

Assuming you are possessed of normal intelligence.

12. Anybody that's ever
picked up anything heavier than a fork knows better. It takes very little effort to do tremendous damage with a knife.

The real world is an interesting place. You should check it out some time.

10. You know, this whole 'points' gag of yours is really quite tasteless
Three people are dead, and all you can think to do is keep an imaginary score? :eyes:

If you truly thought there was a need to post about this specific event on DU, perhaps some relevant topic of conversation could be offered? Personally, I think it would be interesting to know whether support systems for the mentally ill could have done a better job here, or if this individual slipped through a crack, or if warning signs of his dangerousness were missed...

14. Even more interesting to know whether the mentally ill home invader could have obtained a gun.
That's how close this story came to not earning any pro gun credit whatsoever.

What's really interesting is your need to speculate on irrelevant possibilities.
I have no idea why you posted this at all as it is a demonstration against the proposition that gun ownership needs to be reduced and restricted.

That's how close this story came to not earning any pro gun credit whatsoever.

In other words, NOT CLOSE AT ALL since the assailant had no gun.
Perhaps it would be valid/relevant to speculate regarding all of the posts highlighting the victims of criminals with firearms and whether said criminals may have been able to obtain a knife, sword, crossbow, morning star, poison, flame thrower...

17. Speculate away, since those alternatives would probably have given the victim a better chance.

Did you forget your own OP? Are you seriously suggesting that the victims would have had a better chance if the assailant had had a sword?

Piling up victims like cord wood.

20. Thankfully such a thing is extremely rare.
But still, we do clearly need to re-evaluate the mental health system in our nation. Thanks for making this point, shares. Glad to see you abandoning your previously counterproductive position on the topic and join the rest of us in this land we call "reality"!!!

23. So why are some self-defense cases OK but others are not?
I really am baffled by your logic.

According to the FBI UCR, there were 1,318,398 violent crimes in the United States in 2009.

Every single one of the victims of these crimes had a right to defend themselves! Every single one of them. No matter what weapon, if any, they were attacked with.

How can you possibly be less pleased when someone defends themselves against an assailant with a gun as opposed to an assailant with a knife? The gun is the only tool currently available that lets people resist violent attack without resorting to a physical contest of strength.
