Ten minutes Can Be A VERY Long time
I am listening to a police scanner on my computer tonite and a very interesting call going on right now. It involves a 16YO girl alone in a house she’s on the phone W/ 911 dispatch and someone(maybe two people) just came into her home. Shortly after that the person(s) left her home but she thinks there’s still someone in the basement. There are cops converging on the scene from all over the district and as a matter of fact the first call came in that they were on scene while I was writing this. The thing that’s interesting is that it took at least 10 minutes from the time the first call came in till the first unit arrived. Ten minutes is an awfully long time to wait for the police to show up when there’s a bad guy in your house.
It’s even longer when the bad guy is in your house alone W/ your daughter.

I own a gun for a reason

5. That is an old wives tale that is very likely to get you killed
Massad Ayoob quote

Later identified as belonging to one of the "big four" outlaw motorcycle clubs, Too Loose and Papa Zoot were members of an armed subculture themselves. They did not fear guns. Zoot was about 6'4" and 240 himself, and neither man feared big guys dressed like something off the cover of an L.L. Bean catalog. It is critical to understand this: Criminals don't fear guns. Criminals fear resolutely armed men or women they believe will actually shoot them.

intruder could easily get you killed -- and with that I agree. It doesn't mean that the story I recounted is false, however. And I completely agree the criminals fear resolutely armed men or women they believe will actually shoot them.

Edited to add: Ironically, I am fairly certain Massad Ayoob was the one who recounted the story I made reference to!

Now, if the "perps" had bad intentions, there is room for discussion. Plus, this would be an in home situation which I find very different from walking down public roads with a gun or two.

Also, glad she's OK. But would hate to see her situation used to promote more fuckin guns.

Never mind the fact than many more assaults occur outside the home than in. But then, facts never concern the righteous moral crusaders.

16. Really?
The girl was at home alone. According to the dispatcher she said a truck pulled up to the side of her house and she saw 2 males get out and enter her garage through a side door. Then she heard the door from the garage to the house open. and heard the males walking around in her basement. Mind you the dispatcher is giving this all blow by blow over the radio. after that the next I heard was "RP (reporting party) states unknown males departing house" and one of the cops says " One adam 12 on scene"

Now if that was your 16 YO daughter at home alone w/ two guys that you don't know wouldn't you want her to have some means of defending herself?

30. That is an extremely sexist attitude.
A 16 year old female shouldn't be treated like a 5 year old. We give them drivers licenses, and most have fairly broad freedom to socialize outside the home. To leave a 16 year old daughter (or son) at home is not unusual. To expect others to take their 16 year old daughters with them when they leave the house for your warped concept of safety is ridiculous.

With each post you make, I see more and more how truly disconnected from reality you are. It's disturbing, really.

Edited on Mon Nov-28-11 02:48 PM by We_Have_A_Problem
You have no idea of the layout of the house. She may have been nowhere near one of the exterior doors. There may not have been a car there for her to use. You have no idea how close the neighbors are (not everyone lives in that close proximity). At 16 she may not even as of yet known how to drive.

Even exclusive of all of THAT, why in the living fuck should someone retreat from their own home?

I don't give a fuck why a criminal has entered my home. The moment he does so, his life becomes worth less than used toilet paper. I find your mentality that one should have to flee their own home disgusting.

Talk about "limited thinking". Your entire thought process seems to be "Run away, run away! Pray they don't find you and hope the cops arrive in time to protect you! Run! Run! RUN!"

what a pathetic mentality.

40. LOL and your pathetic mentality is to shoot first ... limited thinking, one solution fits all
someone with sense will retreat from their home.

my objective is to survive, unhurt. if that means i have to leave my house so be it. i'm not obsessed with proving my manhood or protecting my tv. if the danger is INSIDE the house, what normal person would stay if they have a reasonable alternative?

you have no idea of the layout of the house either, she may have been right next to an exterior door or window, with a neighbor's home 100 feet away.

i find your mentality that a human is worth less than used toilet paper to disgusting. YOUR attitude about other humans, no matter their circumstances, says waaaaaaaay more about you than it does the "goblin."

i never said one HAS TO flee, but quite often that is the best alternative ... to thinking people.

43. My mentality said nothing about shooting first in this situation.
I was quite clear. She may not have been ABLE to leave.

You may not like that I consider a criminal to be worth less than used toilet paper but I really don't care. There is not a single circumstance you could define which would justify someone choosing to break into my home to steal something or cause me harm. Not one.

If one chooses to flee his home, that is his choice. I agree that sometimes it may be the best choice. However, one should not be obligated to make that choice or castigated if they do not make it.

24. How about 18 year old girls like my daughter was when she used a large caliber revolver ...
to stop an intruder who was forcing the sliding glass door in our kitchen open and was half way in.

My daughter pointed a S&W Model 25-2 .45 acp revolver at him and he ran. No shots were fired. If he had forced the door open and entered the kitchen she would have shot him. (I had instructed her to never shoot anyone unless they were in the house. Since he was only halfway in the house, she followed my instructions to the letter.)

His attempts to open the door set off a burglar alarm and there was a 60 pound female Black Lab in the house. The alarm alerted my daughter but the dog was useless. She was a very intelligent and gentle dog but somewhat cowardly.
