GUNS IN THE NEWS - May 22-24, 2004
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

Feds raid Nevada gun shows; 14 arrested

The Associated Press

RENO, Nev. --
Federal agents working undercover at gun shows in Nevada the past year have arrested 14 suspects on a variety of firearms charges that include illegally possessing machine guns and explosives, agents said Friday.

The FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and local law enforcement agencies joined to apprehend the 13 men and one woman in five Western states -- Nevada, California, Utah, Idaho and Washington -- as part of "Operation Over the Line."

Nine of the suspects were arrested after search warrants were served Friday, and five others already were in custody as part of the investigation, said Daniel Bogden, U.S. attorney for Nevada.

They have been indicted by federal grand juries in Nevada and Idaho. The indictments, some dating to February, were unsealed Friday.

9. Much easier to watch activity concentrated at a gun show...
Edited on Mon May-24-04 10:27 AM by slackmaster
...than scattered all over the city or county, isn't it?

I share OpSomBlood's observation that gun shows are crawling with police, both uniformed and undercover. I certainly hope the BATFE patrols gun shows. That's what we're paying them to do.

If I had an illegal gun to sell, a gun show would definitely not be the place to conduct the illegal transaction. The probability of getting busted is way too high.

...how much of this goes on at gun shows that goes unreported?

Probably a lot fewer illegal transactions than occur elsewhere. In San Diego County we have a major gun show about four weekends each year, at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. That leaves 361 days and hundreds of square miles of territory other than gun shows where illegal activity can happen, and most of the time there are no police around.

Boy, 4, suffers 'critical' gun wound

By Masaaki Harada

The Journal Gazette

A woman found her 4-year-old son critically injured by a gunshot wound in their rural Fort Wayne home Sunday morning, the Allen County Sheriff's Department said.

Police said no one was near the boy when he was found on the second floor of a house at 11514 Thiele Road. Detectives are trying to determine whether the shooting was accidental, spokesman Victor Hopkins said.

The boy was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, police said. His name was not released Sunday.

The mother called 911 at 9:20 a.m. after she found the boy on a bed in an upstairs room, police said. Further information about the child's injury was not available Sunday.

LAKEWOOD, Wash. --
A man sought in a fatal shooting that said reportedly stemmed from an argument over a parking space has been arrested with a gun in his hand, authorities said.

Franklin Scott Dela-Cruz, 27, put down the weapon when he was surrounded by Tacoma police and Pierce County sheriff's deputies Friday evening as he unexpectedly emerged from an apartment near Western State Hospital, sheriff's Detective Ed Troyer said.

Police and deputies had received a tip that Dela-Cruz was there, police officer Mark Fulghum said.

"A lot of manpower and hours have been put into this," he said. "It's a great thing to get him off the street and into custody."

If he had gone to the trouble of getting a CCW permit, and that's a big if from the sounds of this loser, he might have been made to realize in class the error of his ways. It was well discussed in my class that you don't want to draw your gun unless in an actual life
threatening situation.

Conservative Leader's Son Jailed In Road Rage Case
By Jim Burns
CNSNews.com Senior Staff Writer
December 06, 2002

(CNSNews.com) -
The son of a prominent Washington, D.C., conservative leader is scheduled to attend a hearing in federal court later this month after being arrested and charged with shooting at a motorist.

Federal Magistrate Judge T. Rawls Jones, Jr., Friday scheduled a Dec. 17 hearing for David Michael Keene, son of American Conservative Union Chairman David A. Keene.

U.S. Park Police said the 21-year-old Keene was arrested Wednesday evening and is accused of firing a gun at another motorist while driving on a suburban Washington parkway last weekend.

<snip>

Fear said Keene allegedly shot a bullet into another car Dec. 1 while traveling along a stretch of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, shattering the car's rear window. The bullet lodged in the driver's seat and came within inches of striking the driver, police said.

<snip>

Keene's father, besides being chairman of the ACU, is also on the board of directors of the National Rifle Association, which said the group's thoughts and prayers go out to the Keene family, according to NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam.

Road rage shooter has history of emotional problems
By CINDY MORRIS

Special to Capitol Hill Blue
Dec 18, 2002, 07:25

David Michael Keene, the prominent national conservative activist's son charged in a road rage shooting on the George Washington Memorial Parkway, was institutionalized with "severe emotional problems" seven times between the ages of 8 and 13, his mother said Tuesday.

"He's had a continuing problem with impulse control, and an exaggerated belief that he was in more danger than he was in at times, causing him to respond in a way that was more excessive or out of line with what was going on," Keene's mother, Diana Carr, told reporters outside the U.S. District Court in Alexandria.

<snip>

Carr said the gun was registered in Keene's name and added that her son and his fiance were on their way to "target practice" at the time of the incident. Current federal state and gun laws prohibit sale and registration of firearms to persons who have been hospitalized with mental problems. A law enforcement source said they are investigating to see if Keene withheld information about his mental history when he purchased the firearm.

Virginia law requires that firearms carried in a vehicle be inaccessible to the driver or passengers while the vehicle is in operation unless the owner has a concealed carry permit. The George Washington Memorial Parkway is under federal jurisdiction but Park Police often invoke Virginia law during traffic stops and arrests. Keene listed his address as the District of Columbia, which has even stricter laws on ownership of handguns.

Not the kind of person I think should be trusted with a gun under ANY circumstances.

A lot of you pro-gunners seem to think that getting a permit makes it impossible for someone to make a mistake or have a lapse of judgement. I say we are all human, and in a moment of rage there's no telling what someone might do. So why insert more guns into volatile situations??

Police identify Rayne shooting victim

May 24, 2004

RAYNE —
Police on Sunday characterized the shooting death of a Rayne man over the weekend as a week-long argument turned deadly.

At 3:17 p.m. Saturday, Trenell “Prince” Morris was killed by a single gunshot wound to the chest at the corner of Reynolds and West Jeff Davis avenues. Dallas Dugas, 31, has been charged with second-degree murder.

The argument escalated until “one shot the other,” Police Chief George Melancon said.

Melancon said the argument was over Dugas’ niece, who Morris had been dating.
