More women taking up firearms.
TARRYTOWN — In her new book, "Blown Away: American Women and Guns," Caitlin Kelly takes the gun debate recently galvanized by filmmaker Michael Moore to another level.

In his Academy Award-winning documentary, "Bowling for Columbine," Moore examines gun violence in America, but does not address the role firearms play in women's lives, Kelly said.

The Tarrytown author, however, does just that in "Blown Away" (Pocket Books Original; $13), taking what she describes as an unbiased exploration of a woman's right to bear arms, while also calling attention to the many women who succumb to gun violence every year.

"I'm glad Michael Moore started the conversation," said Kelly, 46. "I'm just continuing it. In this country, you are either wildly pro-gun or wildly anti-gun. We need to better understand both sides of the issue.

Teen girls learn about guns, too

"We've definitely seen a revitalization. I think, as a result of Columbine, parents want their children to learn about firearms and firearm safety," said Schwerd, referring to the 1999 shooting massacre in a Colorado high school.
Parse that "thought" now.

Frankly, I don't have much problem with anybody engaging in much of any age-appropriate sport, in an age-appropriate manner and with age-appropriate supervision and training and in the appropriate places and subject to any appropriate regulation. It is inappropriate for 6-year-olds or 10-year-olds to head soccer balls, or tackle football adversaries, or dance en pointe. It's also inappropriate for them to "play" with firearms.

But as to this chicks with guns crap, I'll just repeat what I say everytime some man decides to exploit violence against women by dragging it onto this board. If Caitlin Kelly or any of her ilk (of the liberal/Democratic persuasion, of course) wants to come here and discuss the matter, dandy. If not, I continue to be sick of being exploited for someone else's agenda.

3. I'm not sure if you are for or against women owning guns?
Do you think it's a good idea for women to be armed for self defense?

6. Reading?
Or reading about?

If you've actually read her book, why don't YOU tell us about it instead of reproducing newspaper articles?

And why don't YOU state some sort of position on whatever issues you wish to raise, backed up by whatever fact and argument you think is useful?

I'd say that you started the discussion ... except actually, you didn't.

By the way, my opinion about whether women should have firearms is about as relevant here as my opinion about whether women should have abortions is in a discussion of abortion laws.

The purpose of this site is the discussion of public policy issues, not personal preferences.
