CA Democrats don't help the outreach
This just totally frustrates me. How do I get independents and republicans to come into our party when stupidity like this alienates these voters? Bill Clinton said that the "assault weapon" ban cost us the congress in 1994, Al Gore would have been President and saved us all from the insanity going on now in Iraq if the gun issue hadn't hurt him in key states. Help us get these undecided and wavering workers into and in many cases get them BACK into the fold. Just say no to these wacky anti-rights, anti-privacy schemes.

Do our leaders learn? Well except for Howard Dean I have to say NO.

Here is the latest idiotic scheme:

Calif. Bill Would Require Thumbprint to Buy Bullets
7:50 am PST, 26 May 2004

--snip--
"It's a waste of time and taxpayers' money, but more importantly, this constitutes a serious privacy issue. If this measure dealt with something other than a gun control issue, the ACLU would be screaming about it,"

--snip--
He said if the bill passes the Democrat-controlled House, it would another example of how California treats honest gun owners like criminals.

1. Electoral College makes that a moot issue for the Presidential race
Edited on Wed May-26-04 12:58 PM by slackmaster
The state is so overwhelmingly Democratic at the moment that nothing the extremists in the Legislature could do would be any threat to John Kerry's chances of carrying the state. Our 55 electoral votes are winner-take-all.

The California legislature has way too much free time on its hands. Like the old saying goes, an idle hand is the devil's plaything.

BTW - In case anyone starts screaming about the source of the information presented, here is a link to the official state legislature's site:

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/postquery?bill_number=sb_1152&sess=CUR&house=B&author=scott

The bill reams out PC 12071 and replaces it with longer, even more convoluted spaghetti code.

2. Who "he"? we ask......
And he turns out to be far right wing loony Joe Waldron and the source of the story is that idiot's delight, CNS.com.

"If this measure dealt with something other than a gun control issue, the ACLU would be screaming about it,"
Gee, and yet the ACLU isn't.....wonder why?

3. You missed all the fun earlier.
I've spent the better part of the day debating the above article, and others, with MrBenchley et al.

You are correct though in stating that the appearance of being anti-rights or gun-grabbers hurts the party's attempts to attract voters. There is a common misperception out there that the Democrats are going to come knocking on your door tomorrow, demanding your guns.

There are some among us who believe in gun confiscation.

5. me, I cringe

when someone posts something so disingenuous.

Oh look, they rhyme ...

"ridiculous", "disingenuous" ... and how 'bout "serious"?

Used in a sentence, they might make: "Only someone very disingenuous would reproduce something so ridiculous and pretend to believe that it was serious."

What guns?

I don't have any guns?

What made you think I had any guns?

I exploited the "gun show loophole" and sold the few there are records of.

The others I never had.

16. Records schmecords
The state of California knows about most of my handguns because we have had a de facto registration system since 1968. (It's possible to legally have unregistered ones - pre-1968 and homebuilt ones are OK.)

Most of the gun dealers where I bought long guns have gone out of business. The paperwork has all been shipped to that warehouse you see in the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, the one where the Ark of the Covenant has been filed, never to be seen again.

26. Interestingly enough, the small minority who would comply...
Are likely liberals. You know damn well the right-wingnuts aren't going to give up theirs, the criminals aren't going to give up theirs, the religious fanatics won't give up theirs, and the libertarian types sure as hell aren't giving up theirs.

Basically, the only people who would be unarmed are the liberals. Not a very pretty picture is it? I certainly don't want to be in the unarmed minority, do you?

I am forever amazed at how conservatives cry about the liberal media and never wonder about why every major newspaper as well as the television networks are all owned by liberal Jews. They cry about the liberal trial lawyers which are 62%, according to Michael Medved liberal Jews. The most ultra liberal organization in this country, the ACLU is founded and run by Liberal Jews. It looks to me like the Democratic party is true to its socialist roots."

17. La-La Land
It's against the law in LA county to sell ammunition 7 days before Jan 1st and 7 days before July 4th.

Some brain trust in the CA legislature wanted to pass legislation that would have levied a 5¢ tax on each round of ammunition and individual reloading components.

Fortunately, it was laughed out of committee (after all the negative publicity).

Edited on Sat May-29-04 10:53 AM by slackmaster
Occasionally I'll pick up a case at a gun show.

The proposed legislation would not affect mail-order ammo sales, which are exempt from California sales tax and any other taxes or fees the state might impose.
