GUNS IN THE NEWS - May 29 to June 1, 2004
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. --
A Hallandale Beach father is mourning the loss of his son, who was gunned down on a South Florida highway.

Malcolm Marshall Jr., 20, and his friends were headed to South Beach early Sunday morning when police say they exchanged words with a group in another car. As Marshall's car drove away, police say Willie Lumdson fired a single shot, killing Marshall.

The suspect, Lumsdon, has an extensive criminal record and has spent the past 15 years in and out of prison. He is currently being held without bond.

Shooting kills one, wounds two in Ritchie

By MICHAEL ERB

PENNSBORO -
A Sunday shooting in Ritchie County that left one man dead and two others hospitalized is being described by law enforcement officials as "a domestic situation that came to a bad end."

Few new details, including a specific motive, were available Monday, and the incident is still being investigated, officers said.
Brusie "Don" Lanham, 58, of Pennsboro broke into the residence of Barry "Buck" Moore, 55, on Myles Avenue at around 10:47 p.m. Sunday and opened fire with a .357 Magnum handgun, killing Jon Broadwater, 36, of West Union and wounding Moore, according to a press release from the West Virginia State Police Harrisville detachment.

Man charged with possessing gun, drugs

Police arrested a 52-year-old man Sunday evening after he reportedly armed himself with a stolen gun because he thought his neighbors were trying to kill him.

Gary Lee Silva believed he heard neighbors plotting to kill him, police said, and so he went in his wheelchair to seek help from other neighbors. A neighbor called police and said Silva had a gun.

When officers arrived they saw the butt of a 9 mm pistol sticking out of a pouch on Silva's wheelchair, police said. Officers discovered that the gun had been reported stolen in Montana. They also found small amounts of alleged cocaine and marijuana in his possession.

Pizza man saved by gun, but fired for packin' heat

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=38726

(Fired 15 shots in under 8 seconds, hiting the perp 10 times ...)

A pizza deliveryman won't face charges for fatally shooting a would-be robber several times when he was approached in a high-crime area, but his employer, Pizza Hut, has fired him for violating a company policy against carrying firearms.

Ronald B. Honeycutt, 38, who has a permit to carry a concealed weapon, says he's been delivering pizzas for 20 years and has always packed heat on the job.

8. I wouldn't say that.
I would say that it is a slanted or biased source. Anyway, I posted in another thread about this from the Indy Star.

9. It Still Doesn't Change The Fact...
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 12:45 PM by CO Liberal
...that World Nut Daily is about as reliable (and honest) as the Washington Times. WHat next? Pro-gun stories from Drudge????

ON EDIT - As stated in the guidelines we post every day at the top of these "GITN" threads:

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

Besides, since the original shooting occurred May 17th, this isn't really current news.

10. I agree with you completely
My point, which I didn't make clear, was that a source's bias does not automatically invalidate the source. Obviously, we prefer more mainstream sources, like the Indy Star article I posted.

11. To Many Of Us, The Bias DOES Invalidate The Source
Besides, anyone who constantly goes to places like NewsMax or World Nut Daily for their information doesn't seem to be a progressive Democrat, IMHO.

13. There's a Difference in Motive There
It's one thing to go to right-wing cesspools to prove your point - it's quite another to go there to show that the opposing point is absurd.

15. OK, but I wouldn't know ...
I don't waste space on my hard drive with a slew of "Duck" Cheney & Co. pictures or an exhaustive listing of every right wing nutcase website on my hard drive. Nor do I cruise all the gun oriented web sites to see who is posting what there, and then be outraged by it all.

So, wallowing in "right wing cesspools" as much as you want and quoting them here is OK, as long as you are making fun of them or using them to criticize other Democrats here that you don't agree with.

OK, just checking.
