Suicidal Youths Turn to Hanging Instead of Guns
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/06/10/national/main622450.shtml

Hanging and other forms of suffocation have overtaken guns as the chief means of suicide among American youngsters 10 to 14 years old, the government said Thursday.

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were surprised by the switch and said they first noticed the trend in the early 1990s. By the end of the decade, suffocations had surpassed self-inflected shootings.

...

In 1992, there were 96 suicides by suffocation among Americans 10 to 14 years old, the CDC said. That rose to 163 in 2001. Firearm suicides dropped from 172 to 90 during the same period.

Time to round up all the rope in the country, and outlaw further manufacture, possesion, and sale of the same.

The day the Democratic Party eases up on the gun control agenda is the day it'll become the Majority party in this country for the next one hundred years. The GOP would be a permanent minority party right now where it not for the gun control issue, IMHO.

4. Making fun out of suicide--par for the course from the gun "enthusiasts"
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 10:10 PM by billbuckhead
I seriously doubt whether many of the gun "enthusiasts" on this site are Democrats of any stripe and if any are, I'm ashamed they identify themselves as Democrats. Some votes are so morally tainted that having them is worse than not having them. Gunners making fun of teen suicide are among those people.
All these threats about winning elections need to turned upside down, those soldiers and civilians wouldn't be dying Iraq and our freedom wouldn't be threatened if so many gun "enthusiasts" wouldn't vote fascist every opportunity they get.

8. "those soldiers and civilians wouldn't be dying Iraq..."
Actually, if the Democratic Party had chosen to be a little more realistic about their brand of gun control then Al Gore would be in the White House and perhaps the Iraq War would not have happened and our freedom would be safe. Are you happy now? Now it looks like Kerry is running a strong chance of getting "gored" in November. In spite of my observation that Kerry is as worthless as they come, I still want to see him win...but if he doesn't, I'll try not to say I told you so.

10. Ummmm....
"making fun of teen suicide"? I did no such thing. What I was making fun of was the gun control crowd, which has basically handed the Speaker's gavel in the House and the Majority Leader position in the Senate to the GOP.
Now, I know I'm "newbie" bait here, but I have to say that stating that "some votes are so morally tainted that having them is worse than not having them" is an astonishing statement for someone whom presumably wants to see John Kerry in the White House next year to make. And you question my Democratic credentials! Amazing.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: the day the Democratic Party sheds itself of this "gun grabber" image is the day it becomes the permanent majority party in this country for the next one hundred years. Which would you rather have, bill? Purity from "morally tainted" votes and, hence, a GOP House, Senate, and White House? Or Democrats in charge? Myself, I'd prefer the latter, but, wait, I forgot: I can't possibly exist because I'm a pro-gun Democrat...a figment of my own imagination. Amazing.

50. There are many gun banners by incrementalism here...
...not many are into political suicide by advocating the total banning of guns. But many are into incrementalism.

For example: many advocate extending the AWB yet even out spoken gun control entusiasts have stated that it will do nothing to curtail crime. It just makes the next step in gun banning easier.

Or: outlawing handguns in certain localities. Everyone knows it will only affect the honest citizens of a community but it makes the next step, a state wide ban easier.

I can read, and I don't see much difference. Those of us of limited means may not yet own all the guns we want, so stopping the sale of certain guns is gun-grabbing.

If you're going to enact a ban, I'd rather seen an attempt at national confiscation. One way or another, the results would be very educational.

43. "Ronaldus Magnus": one gun control's all-time greats!
In addition to the stuff you cited, why doesn't anyone remember that when moRon was governor of California, he signed the Mulford Act. The new law pretty much demolished the right to carry in that state. In 1991, he came out in favor of the Brady Bill. And yet, Guns and Ammo have reprinted on their site some boring Reagan column from 1975 and added this icky little tribute:

Ronald Reagan: The Gun Owner's Champion

In our September 1975 issue, Ronald Reagan, then two-time Governer of California, penned this column. A man of conviction, Ronaldus Magnus was true to these words before and during his eight-year presidency.

Nu-uh! Not before, not during, and not after. There are some mighty slow learners at that magazine.

And they call him Ronaldus Magnus. Good grief. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it right there in black and white.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure the column itself was ghostwritten -- all his speeches were.

23. "code for race"?
What? I was warned about red herrings and no more do I turn around than a big hairy one is plopped down in my lap. It is "code" for people who enjoy the responsible use of firearms to hunt, plink, and protect themselves, millions of whom happen to be Democrats. It is "code" for not breeding a whole new generation of "Reagan Democrats" over the gun issue. It is "code" for not allowing the GOP to control all three branches of government because they can reliably point to the gun control crowd and point out who carries their slop buckets for them. In my state the Democrats control every branch of government, and this is in large part because they are reliably pro-gun. But guess what? My state also has an almost completely GOP congressional delegation and votes GOP in presidential elections. I daresay that if the national Democrats had the same attitude towards gun control that my local Democrats do, the electorate here would reliably send Democrats to Congress every two years, IMCO.

35. Gee, bill...
...really? In a bar? In your neighborhood? That's sweet...in my neighborhood bar, even putting the large Freeper GOP element there aside, the pro-gun Democrats present I drink with would have a rather different reaction. A lot of those guys, many of whom belong to a Union, would be amazed beyond belief to hear that they're "on the side of evil," since most of them have voted for every Democrat who's ever appeared on a ballot. And to a man, incredibly enough, they're all gun owners.
Perhaps they're all figments of THEIR own imaginations, too, since you folks in the gun control crowd continue to insist that no "real" Democrat anywhere, anytime, or under any circumstances has EVER touched a firearm for any reason, or even looked at one without first trembling and then throwing up. /Sarcasm.
Please spare me such nonsense: the day the Democratic Party quits carrying the slop buckets for the gun control crowd is the day we become a Majority Party at every level of government for the next one hundred years. That's a proven, and provable, fact.

Yeah, I read something about that a couple of years ago. I'd had the impression that accidental autoasphyxiation deaths tended to occur in an older group of people -- not teens -- but now I'm not so sure. I suppose that something like this could account for some of the suicides among boys, but I really couldn't hazard a guess as to percentage.
