GUNS IN THE NEWS - June 26-28, 2004
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

8 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

FOCUS: PERSONAL PROTECTION
SHOOTING FOR SAFETY

The finger pulling the trigger on the semiautomatic
rifle wore pale pink nail polish, and a slender
shoulder absorbed the kick.

Years ago, you weren't likely to see a woman
taking aim at the Niagara Gun Range or any
public gun range. Times have changed.

Erie County residents are flocking in increasing
numbers for pistol permits, often citing personal
safety and the fear of a terrorist attack or its
chaotic aftermath as reasons for needing a
handgun.

20. It's funny...
The Second Amendment Caucus sure doesn't seem to give a shit for "empowered women." In fact, they seem to hate anything that might REALLY empower women.

And just about every real women's group up to and including the YWCA and the League of Women Voters, ended up on the NRA's enemies list.

2. Sierra Club mystified by Kayne mutiny
"The National Rifle Association locked, loaded and fired its best shot at the Sierra Club this past week only to have the blast explode in its face.
Given a chance for an alliance with the Sierra Club and other hunting and environmental organizations to fight for common-ground wildlife habitat issues, NRA President Kayne Robinson said the NRA would go it alone -- throwing in a nasty and false charge against the Clinton Administration that appeared designed to further smear the Sierra Club and inflame hunters.
Robinson said that "26 million acres" of land was "closed to hunting during the Clinton Administration" -- a charge that was "dead wrong" according to former Forest Service chief Michael Dombeck, who heard the comments.
When pressed, Robinson could not cite or verify a single example to make his case.
"I was embarrassed and appalled (by the NRA)," said Pat Wray of Oregon, an OWAA board member and avid hunter and gun owner. "

3. Son finds parents dead in murder-suicide (FL)
Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 08:29 AM by MrBenchley
"LAKELAND -- A man went to the home of his parents Sunday and found the couple dead of gunshot wounds, the third murder-suicide in Polk County this year, officials said.
Elaine Rawson, 64, apparently shot and killed husband George Rawson, 68, then turned the 9 mm handgun on herself, Polk County sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers said.
The son, whose name was not available, had been worried because he had not heard from his parents in two weeks and went to the Lakeland home to check on them, Rodgers said. The couple likely died between June 9 and June 12, she said."

Murder-Suicide in Pueblo

A Pueblo couple is dead, and police are calling it a murder-suicide. Neighbors heard gunshots and called police around 7:00 Sunday morning.

Officers found a man and a woman shot to death inside the home on Acero, with their two small children crying. Detectives say it appears the man shot and killed the woman, then turned the gun on himself.

The children are in the custody of relatives. The woman was reportedly pregnant, and was due to deliver a baby girl in September.

10. This did not happen because...
..."daddy just had to have a gun". No matter how you try to paint this the gun did not cause the murder-suicide.
This could be more easily blamed on cut backs for mental health counseling or cut backs in women's center assistance.

So blaming it on the Republicans is fine, just blame it on the right part of their screw-ups.

Four charged in fatal shooting at apartment complex

By Wendy Bigham The Herald
(Published June 28‚ 2004)

Four people were arrested by Rock Hill police Sunday in connection with a Saturday night shooting that left a 27-year-old Rock Hill man dead.

Charged with the murder of Arvell Derell Bagley, who lived at Paces River apartments off Celan-ese Road, are Des-mond Tonnellis Campbell, 22, of 2687 McDaniel Road, in Richburg; Christopher Alan Woody, 24, of 836 Westover, Danville, Va.; and Debrezio Mendes Campbell, 20, of 2799 McDaniel Road in Richburg.

Shaquavious Carmanece Robinson, 20, of 1275 Stoneypoint Drive, Apt. 201, Rock Hill, was charged with misprision of a felony, which means police think she had knowledge of the shooting but wasn't involved with it.

<snip>

Police don't know yet what motivated the shooting, said Lt. L.D. "Dart" Raymes of the Rock Hill Police Department. But Bagley had been in and out of trouble for a number of years and in December was indicted by a state grand jury on charges that he was involved in an insurance fraud ring in York County.

Three victims of Detroit shooting remain hospitalized

June 28, 2004, 8:39 AM

DETROIT (AP) --
Three of the nine people shot during a downtown fireworks display remained hospitalized Monday.

Lewis Nelson, 22, of Detroit, was upgraded Sunday from critical to serious but stable condition at Detroit Receiving Hospital, where all the victims of Wednesday's shootings were taken, spokeswoman Karen Wood said. Nelson was wounded in the heart.

Nelson's girlfriend, 18-year-old Shari Ridley of Westland, was in serious condition. Detroiter Donald Murphy, 47, was in fair condition, Wood said.

Laurie Foster, a 21-year-old University of Colorado student from Lakewood, Wash., and Detroit resident Aaron Edmondson, 17, were discharged Saturday. The other four victims previously were discharged.

Police have charged Daron T. Caldwell, of Detroit, with nine counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of using a gun in a felony and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. He pleaded not guilty on Friday and was held on $100 million bond.

Multiple shooting victim expected to live

By Lisa Ray
Texas City Sun

Published June 28, 2004

TEXAS CITY —
A local man who was shot multiple times Sunday is expected to survive.

Texas City Police investigators are working with the Dickinson Police Department to track down the shooting suspect, according to Sgt. Ross Clements.

When officers arrived at the scene of the shooting around 3:40 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of First Avenue North, they found a man lying in the street bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. The man was conscious and able to tell the officers what happened, Clements said.

Officers on the scene interviewed the victim who told them a man he knew only by a nickname opened fire on him from a brown colored car. The victim told police he thought the shooter lived in Dickinson. The victim was shot in the stomach, arm and leg.

"Police are investigating after two men were shot outside a funeral home Monday morning.
The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. at 10th Street and Ann.
There is no word on the victims' conditions.
Police told KMBC that a funeral was being held at the time for Aaron Roundtree, who was shot to death last week at a gas station.
Earlier this year, Roundtree was charged, along with another man, in the Nov. 28, 2003, death of Michelle Wallace. She was found shot to death in her SUV in Gladstone. But charges against both men were dropped when a witness declined to testify. "

33. Shooting accidental, authorities say
"Two Columbia teens face charges in connection with a shooting that left a 17-year-old with a bullet wound in her back, according to a news release from the Boone County Sheriff’s Department.
The June 13 shooting at 501-A Mauller Road initially was reported as committed by an intruder. Evidence at the scene, however, convinced detectives the shooting was accidental, Sgt. Tom Reddin said.
Warrants for Joe Henry Hawkins and Jasmine Amber Paige were issued Friday. Hawkins faces a second-degree assault charge, and Paige faces a felony charge for allegedly hindering prosecution.
The victim was making a bed in a lower room of the home when she was struck by the bullet. Hawkins was "mishandling" the weapon in the next room when it misfired, Reddin said."
