GUNS IN THE NEWS--August 6, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Money dispute turns deadly (SC)
"NORWAY - A Block Road woman was shot and killed early Thursday in what police say may have been a domestic dispute over money.
After a 911 call about a shooting incident, police found Patricia Ann Clemens, 42, dead of a gunshot wound at her Norway residence. Her common-law husband has been charged with murder.
"Apparently, this was a domestic-related issue," Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams said. "The man discharged a shotgun at her, striking her in the upper torso."
A warrant for murder has been served against Lawrence Stroman, 67, of 249 Block Road. Stroman is being housed at the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center awaiting arraignment."

3. Okla. Man Accidentally Shoots Self in Rear
"BRISTOW, Okla. - Drew Patterson wanted to protect himself after hearing reports of an fugitive in this northeastern Oklahoma community. He didn't think he would be nursing a sore rear end.
Patterson's .22-caliber pistol, hooked into the waistband of his denim shorts with the hammer pulled back, apparently fired, hitting Patterson in the left buttock Wednesday afternoon.
"At first, I didn't feel anything at all," said Patterson, who talked readily about the incident Thursday at his parents' Bristow home.
Patterson said he walked into his parents' home and said, "Mom, I did something bad." "

5. poor gun handling really CAN cost you your ass
If it hadn't been just a .22, he'd be going through life one-bunned.

Why in blazes would anyone want to walk around with a cocked pistol in his shorts? Couldn't he afford a holster?

"I had good intentions, but I screwed the whole thing up," Patterson said.

Patterson said he was told to keep walking to avoid complications as the wound healed.

"It hurts fiercely now," he said while walking slowly and gingerly.

No, I'm not going to laugh at the man who shot his own bottom.

4. Cop charged with shooting up S.I. strip club (NYC)
http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/219578p-188827c.html

On of New York's Finest was busted yesterday after peeling off 12 rounds from his service gun at a Staten Island strip club, cops said yesterday.

No one was hurt when the veteran transit cop fired his Glock at Curve's lobby entrance after he got into a late-night argument as he left the club on July 28, sources said.

Jonathan Lugo, 36, barely missed at least 50 customers and workers inside the Arthur Kill Road club, the sources told the Daily News.

Cops arrested Lugo at his Staten Island home about 5:30 p.m. yesterday and charged him with reckless endangerment, but more counts could follow. "Pretty much, this is probably the dumbest thing that he could have done," a law enforcement source said.

6. God bless those Illinois Republicans
From a liberal pundit (are those folks allowed as sources down here?)

"I couldn't believe my good fortune when I came home last night after a long evening to see that the Illinois GOP had chosen Alan Keyes for its senate standard bearer against Barack Obama.
In an era of political drama often tilting toward tragedy, comedy isn't always an easy thing to summon from the news. But I'm confident that Keyes will be helping to rectify that problem.
Keyes is something else to watch on the hustings or in a debate. But calling him a master debater is rather like saying Dolly Parton has a dynamite bod or Lou Ferrigno is toned -- or, perhaps mostly aptly, that the Tasmanian Devil from the Bugs Bunny cartoons is quick on his feet. In other words, impressive in his own way, but also a bit cartoonish and rather less than subtle.
If and when these two guys debate what we're going to hear are rants from Keyes -- both spellbinding and inane -- about how tort reform is necessary to bring America back into compliance with natural law, how drug reimportation is incompatible with the principles outlined in the Declaration of Independence and how gun control has been outlawed by God. 7. blech
:eyes:

Alan Keyes is a twit, his stance on rkba notwithstanding. He threw a pretty amusing tantrum when his party limited the number of nomination seekers at some big campaign thing in New Hampshire.

BTW, how does he pronounce his name? Is it Keyes, rhymes with fleas, or Keyes, rhymes with flies? I automatically read it as the second, but I think that most of country pronounces it the first way.

8. Man Complains About Party, Brandishes Shotgun (MD)
"The incident in Baltimore's Federal Hill neighborhood has led to criminal charges and a separate investigation at Baltimore's Veteran's Administration Hospital, WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team lead investigative reporter Jayne Miller reported.
On Saturday night, Paul Shabaz called the front desk attendant of the Harbor Hill Apartment building to complain about music that was too loud at a birthday party in a neighboring apartment, Miller reported.
At some point afterward, Shabaz allegedly brandished a shotgun and took it to the building's front lobby.
Joe Fonte, the apartment building's owner, told the 11 News I-Team that the attendant called him, saying "Mr. Shabaz is at he bottom of the steps with a shotgun, and he wants you." "

Gun control - Hitting your target!!!

Woman kills four gunmen attacking her house in Chechnya
06.08.2004, 16.10

GROZNY, August 6 (Itar-Tass) - The wife of a Justice Ministry official killed four gunmen who attacked her home in the settlement of Shali in Chechnya and who killed her husband, the press centre of the regional operational headquarters controlling the counter-terrorism operation in the North Caucasus told Itar-Tass on Friday.

Four bandits wearing masks and camouflage uniform attacked the house of the family of Justice Ministry official Ramzan Asukhanov at night. The bandits killed Asukhanov and attempted to drive away the VAZ car that was near the house.

Asukhanov's wife took her husband's submachine gun he had as an official and opened fire on the bandits.

One of the gunmen attempted to throw a grenade at the woman, but it exploded in his hands.

Three of the attackers died on the spot. The fourth, Islam Dakayev, a student of the Shali religious school, was wounded and died in a local hospital.

Other two attackers are identified as local resident Temirlan Israilov, 23, and Said Magomed Dzhabrailov, 31, from Grozny. The identity of the fourth has yet to be established.

The bandits' two submachine guns, two pistols and a radio set were found on the scene.

A document will be submitted to grant a state award to Asukhanova, headquarters sources said.

Earlier sources in the Chechen Interior Ministry said that gunmen had planned to kidnap Asukhanov and that he was killed in his relative's house.
