Gun-free America still aim of some
This campaign season, the Democrats seem to be throwing everything they can think of at George W. Bush to see what sticks. It doesn't seem to matter if the charges are true or even if the president has any connection to the subject in question.

One of the most recent charges is that Bush endangers Americans if he doesn't actively push for a renewal of the Clinton-era ban on certain semi-automatic rifles and pistols. The decade-old ban is set to sunset in September unless Congress and the president renew it.

<snip>

"The fact of the matter is there is no legitimate use for these weapons," said New York Sen. Charles Schumer, a longtime opponent of gun rights.

What Schumer and others like him either fail to realize or refuse to admit is that they are not the final arbiters of what are legitimate uses of firearms. Our guess is that they know it, but it doesn't serve their interests to face the facts.

<snip>

Putting aside the fact that the banned guns are not really "assault weapons," our right to protect our lives, liberty and property isn't limited by someone's notion of which firearms we can own to do so.

Complete article

While I'm certainly no fan of Bush or his policies I think that bashing the President, but not the House or the Senate, is the wrong way to go about enacting change. Unless and until the Congress sends a bill to the President's desk there is absolutely nothing the President can do about it. Bashing Bush over this sounds more like mudslinging than an attempt at real change and only alienates the 20% or so of undecided voters we need to swing in our favor if we hope to win this election.

4. Doesn't look like what?
Please show me one instance where I've stated, or implied, support for Bush or his policies? I'm a fan of the right to keep and bear arms for defense. Is that a position solely the property of the right in this country? Do not liberals have that right? Should we surrender the issue to Bush & Co. and simply accept the label "gun grabbing liberal" and wear it as a badge of honor? I think perhaps not.

6. Again blind links are annoying
Freedom Communications, which owns the paper you linked to, is a hard-core libertarian corporation... despite the oxymoron.

As to your comment about Congress, I've got two words for you: Executive Order. For starters, check out what it's done to women's reproductive rights around the world. And to Iraqi control of their own nation and its resources.

7. You are correct re. Executive Orders.
However, Congress can over rule EOs and, especially in the two instances you quoted, should.

8. Come Off It

As always, the Republicans, from the White House resident on up, are carrying the ball for you gun rights activists. And as always, you're grateful to them for it; it would be illogical for you to be otherwise. When you shit-can Schumer and offer support for Bush in this forum, you're not fooling anybody. Don't act like a wounded debutante when you're called on it.....

11. NEWSFLASH!!!!
(snip)

"Theoretical physicists using supercomputers have modeled conditions in which it is actually POSSIBLE (my emphasis) for some republicans and democrats to AGREE (again, my emphasis) on certain issues, in part or in whole. These issues may include, but are not necessarily limited to, abortion rights, property rights, GUN CONTROL (emphasis) and taxes."

12. So true, Johnny....
"The Assault Weapons Ban has enormous bipartisan support across the nation. A poll released last week by Penn, Schoen & Berland showed 66 percent of Republicans, 75 percent of Democrats and 79 percent of independents supported renewal."

20. It would seem
Edited on Sat Aug-14-04 07:47 PM by thomas82
That not all of America wants the ban to be renewed.

http://www.cnn.com/POLLSERVER/results/10738.content.html

but it doesn't matter what the polls say cause everyone of them are BS.The truth is 80% of Americans (sheep perhaps??) have no clue what the Assault weapon ban does, hell most of them can't name more than ten Presidents.

In 29 days the ban will be history and then when everyone sees that assault weapons (semi autos having a bayonet lug ,collapsible stock on a AR15)does not cause the thousand of deaths the antis cry about. It will just fade into history like prohibition did.

The day that someone give me a valid reason why a plastic collapsable stock is so dangerous to the public is the day I sprout wings and fly to work.

any takers??? I didnt think so. Im not trying to be a ass but pathetics laws piss me off to no end.
Tom

13. Actually the Legislat reps the people
"What Schumer and others like him either fail to realize or refuse to admit is that they are not the final arbiters of what are legitimate uses of firearms."

And our reps enact the people's will. Schumer is doing exactly what his constituents want him to.

27. Id support a true gun free America or world
If there was a way to push a button and make all guns disapeer..Id gladly push it.

But thats just wishful thinking. No country has ever been (nor truly tried) to achieve this. Even in countries that ban private gun ownership, the police and military still own and use them...sometimes on their own citizens.

The truth is, even if guns were totally banned, criminals and outlaw governments would still have them and use them to harm innocent people.

Given thats it impossible, then I opt to arm myself against the bad guys.

The genie is out of the bottle, and its impossible to return it.
