GUNS IN THE NEWS--August 10, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Teen seeks to buy gun manufacturer
"Maxfield, 17, is in the final days of a tense, quixotic gambit to buy and dismantle the company that made the gun that left him a quadriplegic.
Last year the teen won a record $24 million judgment against Bryco Arms, its distribution arm, and its owner. Bryco was forced into bankruptcy, and on Thursday, a federal judge in Florida will auction off 75,600 unassembled guns and other remaining assets.
Maxfield hopes to buy the inventory, melt it down, and create a sculpture from the metal. The teen and his lawyer, Richard Ruggieri, say revenge is not their motivation -- they simply want to make sure no one else is hurt.
''It started with horror, the realization that -- notwithstanding the fact that we had this unanimous finding of defect -- there was nothing in the law to prevent them from putting these defective guns back on the market," said Ruggieri, who took on Maxfield's case in 2001 when no other lawyers would."

"Fort Lauderdale police on Monday identified a Lauderhill man as the victim of a fatal shooting outside of a post-funeral gathering over the weekend.
Linval G. Titus, 47, of 6701 W. Oakland Park Blvd., died after an unidentified gunman shot him in the head during a gathering of 100 mourners who had left a funeral earlier.
Titus, along with about 100 others, gathered outside of a Fort Lauderdale apartment to mourn the passing of a local man, Ralford Anderson, 54, who died of natural causes.
The shooter, who police are calling ''Wayne,'' walked into the front yard of an apartment at 2675 SW Sixth Ct. about 2:50 p.m. Saturday and shot Titus, police said."

13. good ol' google images
I should do a better job of crediting.

http://www.b3ta.com/board/archive/4181/

People do all sorts of things on the internet besides argue about firearms policy, amazingly enough. I'm not sure exactly what it is that those folks are doing, but they seem to be enjoying themselves.

I googled for my postal code the other day (looking for StatsCan data about income by census areas) and came up with a site where my idiot co-vivant had registered to talk incomprehensibly about music composing software, and given his real postal code. Sheesh.

15. well gee
I guess you should just learn to speak more clearly.

And be sure to accuse all your little chums hereabouts of copyright violation whenever they post an image from another site, 'k?

Speaking of speaking clearly, surely you aren't suggesting that I tried to pass the work off as my own. I think I've made it plain in the past that I don't know nuttin about photoshop ... and unless you were suggesting that I'd adopted the name "dogbomb", which appears clearly on the image ... well, I just don't know.

You should maybe have done the work before speaking the second time. The image was copied from the site I provided a link to ... where it appears to have been posted by dogbomb him/herself. And of course the image I posted contained the credit info placed there by the author.

Heck. Maybe you're trying to say something else altogether.

All in all, I guess I just don't know what yr problem is, if problem you have, but if you wanted to speak plainly, perhaps I'd get it.

19. oh oh oh oh oh

I hadn't seen the "replacement", you see. Very clever.

Last time I looked at the image in my post, it was an image. I went and checked the source I had got it from, not my post, when I was checking that it said "dogbomb" on it. I just looked at my post again now and saw the "replacement" for the first time; the replacement process seems to take some time. I get it. Your reply made no sense at all as a reply to what I posted, and had seen posted, was the problem. (I hadn't even known that the image was from a site called "dogbomb", since I just found it on a discussion forum, posted by someone with the handle "dogbomb". Still no excuse for the lifting, of course, but one doesn't tend to think of things on public forums as being jealously guarded by their authors.)

If you want to see the picture, copy this and paste it and remove the space.

7. Boynton Beach man killed in second drive-by shooting (FL)
"WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A man who survived a drive-by shooting five months ago was killed in a second drive-by shooting on the same block, officials said.
Victel "Victor" Servius, 26, of Boynton Beach, died Monday on the pavement about 25 feet from his vehicle, police said. The suspects remained at large.
In March, Servius and two friends were driving on the same block when shots erupted from a passing vehicle, according to police reports. One of his friends suffered a leg wound, but Servius was not injured.
On Monday, Servius crashed his auto-detailing vehicle into a fence, jumped out of the passenger side and ran up the street where he died, police said."

11. Congressman pleads guilty to gun charge
And they threw the booklet at him, too....

"LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- An Indiana congressman pleaded guilty today to a charge he brought a loaded gun to Louisville International Airport in April.
Rep. John Hostettler did not appear in Jefferson County District Court to enter the plea to a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed deadly weapon.
Hostettler agreed to a 60-day sentence that would be suspended for two years, said Bill Patteson, a spokesman for the Jefferson County Attorney's office. Hostettler would not have to serve the sentence if he meets the terms of the plea agreement, Patteson said.
As part of the plea today, Hostettler agreed to surrender the handgun that was found in his luggage on April 20. Also for a two-year period, Hostettler would only be allowed to buy a handgun in Indiana and Washington, D.C., his two places of residence."

And by the way, this is the sort of fuckwit who calls himself "pro-gun"...a shining part of the scummy Second Amendment Caucus...

17. Man hit by shotgun after quarrel on road (CA)
Another glorious celebration of the Second Amendment!

registration required
"Police said a preliminary investigation revealed the victim was driving west on Story Road near Jackson Avenue, following his sister home from church, when a dark-color Chevy Silverado extended-cab pickup truck swung wide into that lane as it took a right on Story from Jackson.
The pickup skidded to a stop to avoid a collision with the sister's vehicle. The victim and the driver of the Silverado argued over the incident.
At that point, the pickup driver began to make gestures that the victim took to be gang signs. The victim withdrew, but as he drove north on Highway 101 near the 13th Street off-ramp, the Silverado pulled up on the left.
A passenger in the truck opened fire with a shotgun. One of the three rounds fired slightly injured the victim, whose vehicle sustained major damage."

20. 3 men injured in Homestead shootings (PA)
"Four men last night had a shootout on a Homestead street, leaving three of the four men in the hospital.
The shooting happened at 11:45 last night in the 800 block of Amity Street, Homestead police Chief Mark Zuger said. Two men were standing on the sidewalk, the other two men were standing in the street, and the two teams were arguing with each other, the chief said.
A Homestead police officer on patrol came upon the men just as gunfire erupted.
The men scattered upon seeing the officer, leaving behind two semi-automatic pistols. Two men ran toward East Hazel Way, while the other men started toward Eighth Avenue. One of the men bound for Eighth Avenue doubled back to the officer, saying he'd been shot, Zuger said. "
