GUNS IN THE NEWS--August 16, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. More gun violence in Riviera Beach as man shot in early-morning altercatio
"More gunfire rang out in Riviera Beach on Sunday, less than a day after a shootout killed one man and wounded another.
One man was shot several times in an altercation with two people at 8:15 a.m., according to officials from the Riviera Beach Police Department. The man, whose identity was not released Sunday, was in stable condition at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach. The shooting occurred in the 1000 block of 30th Street, authorities said.
The violence followed Saturday's drive-by shooting at the Citgo station at Old Dixie Highway and West Blue Heron Boulevard that left 23-year-old Carlone Rogers dead. The incident erupted at 4 p.m. as Rogers, a landscape worker, was tending the station's lawn. The shots came from either a white pickup driving through the station or a Cadillac parked there, according to Diane Carhart, spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office.
Rogers attempted to escape the mayhem by running into the gas station, but the spray of bullets reached him inside the store, also wounding store customer Joseph Jacques, 45, of Pompano Beach. Jacques was treated at St. Mary's Medical Center and released Sunday."

15. Lock up the Sun-Sentinel and throw away the key.
Everyone knows there's no such thing as a "spray of bullets." That's libel against guns, that is.

2. FBI turns to ads in Gun News for tips on Wales killing
"SEATTLE -- The FBI has taken out an ad in Gun News magazine hoping to generate tips that could help solve the murder of Thomas Crane Wales, a federal prosecutor shot to death in his basement nearly three years ago.
The two-page advertisement asks readers who know anyone with an "after-market" barrel for a Makarov semi-automatic pistol to call the agency. It describes the barrels, manufactured by Federal Arms Corp., as being made of stainless steel and having six lands and grooves. Original barrels for the pistols are made of blued steel with four lands and grooves.
The ad's other page offers a $1 million reward for information that helps solve the case. It describes Wales, 49 and a father of two, as an assistant U.S. attorney in Seattle for 18 years who specialized in prosecuting white-collar crime.
Wales, also an anti-gun activist, was killed as he worked at his computer the night of Oct. 11, 2001. The gunman fired several shots through the basement window."

3. Crackdown takes guns off streets (MA)
"In the past six days, Boston police officers have seized 15 weapons as part of the effort to stem the sudden surge of violence in the city. As they have been for 15 years, each of those weapons will get special treatment in a joint effort by police and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, authorities said yesterday.
Once seized by police, the federal agency will begin the process of learning the weapon's history, starting with the gun maker and working through the chain of ownership in an attempt to learn the identity of the owner before it was used in a crime.
The effort is worth it, two Boston police detectives and two special agents with the federal agency said yesterday, noting that South Carolina authorities have prosecuted a man who used relatives in that state to legally buy handguns there, which he sold on Boston's streets.
Boston detectives expressed frustration that they can find out, almost instantly, the history of a car involved in a crime, but cannot do the same for guns. Federal law bans computerized record-keeping for handguns, officials said."

5. Road-rage shooting reported on I-35E (TX)
"Shane Poncho was driving home to Oklahoma early Saturday when he came into a busy stretch of Interstate 35E near many late-night clubs and bars.
An exchange of obscene hand gestures led to gunshots being fired at Mr. Poncho's Ford Bronco. The bullets shattered a side window and hit Mr. Poncho in the back.
The assault is believed to be at least the third such shooting in the same two-mile stretch of the Stemmons Corridor since November. All three incidents happened from 2 to 3 a.m. between Motor Street and Mockingbird Lane. "

"TAUNTON -- A 30-year-old man was shot seven times and found by police lying just inside a door at 137 DeWert Ave., early yesterday morning.
Nathaniel Moore, with the last known address of 45 Colonial Terrace in Plymouth, had multiple gunshot wounds to the lower extremities, a police press release stated. He was shot three times in the left thigh, two times in the right hip and two times in the right buttocks, a police official said. He was transported to Morton Hospital and Medical Center and later transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Mass General Hospital did not return phone calls regarding his condition.
This was allegedly the second time in three weeks Moore has sustained gun shot wounds, police said. Police suspect this is a dispute between two or more individuals known to each other and is not a random shooting, police said."
