1. They work great off the grid...
No electricity required, provided you have a manual type.

Should peak oil shut down the power grid, you are still up and running.

The original message (post #1) was quite clear about this.

22. Give it up already.
You've already had two perfectly valid responses to your question, posts 1 and 3. Neither had to resort to "because I want one." In three posts, you got what we couldn't get in 94 posts (and counting) on the other thread.

28. So listing the positive features of an item...
is a justification for owning one?

Saying I am justified in owning a manual type writter because it doesnt use electricity is okay?

So by that same token I would be justified in owning an assault weapon because it has a detachable magazine?

29. It's more than we could get in the first 95 posts on the other thread.
But no, that's not it. The fact that a typewriter doesn't use electricity means that it can be used to type when and where there is no electricity. See? In other words, it does something important and useful that can't be done by anything else. That's not just a "feature." That's a justification.

I saw your detachable magazine post on the other thread and was going to let it go unanswered, because it was more responsive and respectful than any other response to the original post. But now that I see that it was just a ploy . . .

30. yet....
Well it could be argued that typing is not necessary.

To be able to communicate with the written word one does not need a typewritter.

You could use pens and pencils to write when there is no electricity.

Why should you be allowed to own a pen and pencil though?
after all, why do you need to write at all? In fact, why don't we all just go back to caves now, instead of waiting for peak oil to finish us off?

43. I found a Selectric at work yesterday
It was sitting there idling away waiting for someone to put in some label stock or whatever and type something.

It was making that familiar (to us older folks at least) reassuring whir, which is actually an electric motor turning a mechanical linkage that includes a clutch. Wasting mechanical energy and very slowly wearing itself out, waiting for someone to press a key.

They're amazingly durable, reliable machines. Amazingly heavy too.

I like Selectrics and have done a lot of work using them, but if I ever decide to write a Manifesto I assure you it will be on a classic manual machine so people can see my intensity rise and fall when they read it.

Those right wingers are insidious and create all kinds of fake movements and organizations to make it look like RW talking points aren't actually RW talking points. So many innocent people have been taken in and believe they actually believe the things they believe when in fact they are walking right into the right wingers' clutches.

32. NOW I KNOW YOU"RE A PHONY HIPPIE!
Time to roll a fattie!

You don't "roll" a fattie.

Fatties are "twisted up", not rolled!

You roll a "number" or a "joint".

Easy as spotting a German spy - Ask them who won the 1938 World Series, or make them say "wristwatch".

3. for 10.00 I picked up a 1940s Underwod in good condition.
I can find ribbons for it pretty cheaply. I have to say it really felt nice to have something that NEVER crashes, needs electricity or can't be fixed.

An added plus is the sound it makes, and the little bell.
I like anachronisms.
As an office machine in good shape, not missing any parts, its probably worth a couple hundred dollars.

but the real reward is writing letters with it.

why would anyone need that kind of firepower for information distribution. You can use pens, pencils and paper. I see no reason for civilians to have such things. People that want typwriters should get a Government News/journalism job. Words are dangerous no one should have a "word hose".

Typewriters should be banned please its for the children. Next people will want faxes and them voice dictating thingies.

14. Typewriters are gateway tools
next you'll start using antique word processors. Soon, that won't be enough and you'll need more. You'll graduate to an early Amiga, maybe an IBM 286. Within a year you'll be on Pentium III, mainlining high speed INTERNET. Your family will never see you, you'll be downloading porn, illegal music, playing violent video games. Just don't start - you might wind up with a horrid fate - you might get a desk job.

I'll give up my Smith Corona Sterling portable (which my mom used when she was in college in the 1950s) when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.

RW conspiracy theory? Consider it so at your own risk. Don't come whining to me to type a letter when your computer won't boot up or you can't get a cartridge for your obsolete printer.

I can still get ribbons for my typewriter. Can you still get cartridges for your HP printer that's only a fraction as old?

I didn't think so.

40. Actually, we keep a typewriter in the library.
And this is a library with over 45 computers plus a computer lab on the second floor. Nobody every has to wait in line to use a computer. But students come in here with forms, such as job application forms, which have to be typed. You can't just feed the forms into the printer unless you have a program which matches the spacing of the fill-points. So we keep a typewriter on hand.
