George Bush supports extending the assault weapons ban
http://www.senate.gov/~feinstein/03Releases/r-assaultwepsprez.htm

Does this mean that the NRA will label him a traitor, an anti-American, and too stupid to comment on gun laws, like they're doing with Kerry?
Or does this issue make it perfectly clear that the NRA is a branch of the Republican party, and that they have no interest in the candidates' actual POSITIONS on the AWB (or any other gun related issue), and that the NRA is merely interested in which party the candidates belong to?

1. He'll support extending it, then let it die...
It's his MO. Make a scene for the media, then do the opposite.

2. Huh?????
Did it suddenly occur to him that not just Republicans could buy those things?

After all, us Dems have been getting mighty testy lately.

9. Wait until after September 13
Things that are "assault weapons" and unavailable (except used, at high prices) to you now will be on the market at market-driven prices.

can I get a rosewood handle?

Rosewood comes from endangered tropical trees. Please be environmentally responsible and stick with American walnut if you must have wood.

4. The gun issue cuts both ways.
Edited on Wed Sep-08-04 05:57 PM by icehouse
Alan boyd my local congressman is a strong 2nd supporter. I have met and talked to him at length. Now my senator is anti gun. Senator graham.

Bushy is just trying to rustle up fence sitters.

And the NRA has yet to endorse bushy for president

7. Good chance
He had got to distance him self from anything anti-gun.

Show that he is truly committed to the the fundamentals of the second amendment.

Stand up and say no new aw ban or anything other new anti-gun legislation and then stand firmly behind it and veto it at every chance.

Yes the NRA will proudly endorse him as I hope that they would.

Remember the NRA is not a fan of repubs either. Bushy 1 was not favored by the NRA and turned in his life membership.

Bushy current is not so hot either with gun minded voters either.

10. If the NRA website is any indicator
then the NRA will endorse Kerry right after we have that snowball fight in hell.

http://www.nrapvf.org/kerry/Read.aspx?ID=4086

This is no endorsement of the NRA or it's policies. It is simply a link to establish the presence of the NRA's collective opinion about Senator Kerry.

11. Thank you for presenting the facts.
"His voting record makes John F. Kerry the most anti-gun Presidential nominee in United States history".

I don't expect the NRA to endorse John Kerry anytime soon either, in light of that comment.

15. And I'm "shocked" every 4 years when the NRA endorses the right winger
even though the members of the NRA "aren't Republicans".

16. So you share in the disbelief
that the NRA isn't going to work with sportsman Kerry?

even though the members of the NRA "aren't Republicans".

Well, some of them are. Not all of them.

6. This isnt new news
And its purely a political calculation made by both candidates. Although Kerry did sign on to 1431, he isnt mentioning it anywhere he goes. You see him holding a gun more often than you hear him talk about gun control. I dont doubt that bushy has and will continue to avoid the gun issue also. He knows as well as Kerry that it is political suicide.

8. I neither know nor care what the NRA thinks about his deception
Edited on Wed Sep-08-04 06:32 PM by slackmaster
I'll be happy to share exactly what I think about it:

George W. Bush is a liar. He doesn't care about the right to keep and bear arms any more than he cares about renewing the AWB. It's pretty fucking obvious he said he'd renew it as a way of pandering to the most naive gun control supporters, while giving a nod and a wink to those on the pro-RKBA side who are willing to do anything including telling wholesale lies in order to push their agenda.

I feel the same way about George W. Bush's two-faced approach to the AWB issue as I do about the attitude of one of our regulars here in the Gungeon who snidely applauded the Democratic National Committee platform for supporting the Second Amendment rights of citizens because (so he claimed) it would "fool" some gun owners into voting Democratic.

I say people who can't or won't express their views in honest, clear language owe the rest of us the courtesy of staying out of the debate. Bush knew damn well the Republican leaders in Congress wouldn't let an AWB renewal see the light of day. If he was an honest man he would have said something like "It's up to Congress to reauthorize the ban. If they decide to do that, then I'll give serious consideration to signing it" or some other such non-answer. But he couldn't pass up an opportunity to lie and tell people he'd "support" it. I think people have a clear picture in their heads of what a President's support means.

Gun control supporters, here's a news flash: Bush lied to you. Surprise!

17. Says who?
I'd say a rabid single-issue lobby with about 4 million paying members is a force to be reckoned with.

Just to be clear, I am not now nor have I ever been pro-NRA.
