/Ben Stein on

Bueller? Bueller?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uselections2004/comment/story/0,14259,1301656,00.html

"The assault weapons ban - the landmark bill signed into law by Bill Clinton that took dangerous automatic weapons off US streets - is set to sunset next week."

"Then Kerry should raise an AK47 aloft and say: "This is an AK47, the same weapon terrorists used to storm that school in Russia. Republicans in Congress and President Bush want to put weapons like these back on our streets. We won't let them.""

"Thirdly, Kerry should cut an ad that goes down US assault weapon memory lane. It could open with the Los Angeles bank robber shooting rampage in 1997, when criminals in body armour strafed away at policemen with handguns for over an hour on live TV."

"They need to know that the market place that deals in M16s, AK47s, Tech 9s and the like is gearing up with Lockean efficiency."

I mean JEEZ!!

Telling people it (the awb) didn't have anything to do with automatic weapons gets tiring.

Did brady/HCI or CSGV buy the guardian or something? The rhetoric sounds AWEFULLY familiar. The misleading rhetoric gets extremely sickening after a while, especially when it becomes clear that some actually believe it.

1. Maybe if Bush had to stare down the barrel...
...of an assault weapon, he'd change his mind.
On the other hand, that would probably give him some kind of sexual thrill!!!
That's how sleazy creeps like him are.

What a lazy, stupid clown that George Bush is.

2. We can agree on that!
"What a lazy, stupid clown that George Bush is."

Except that it gives real clowns and lazy people a bad name. :)

3. Wow. Just wow.
So is this Philip James guy a liar or just completely ignorant?*

Telling people it (the awb) didn't have anything to do with automatic weapons gets tiring.

It especially gets tiring when you end up telling the same people over and over again. I once suggested a putting a sticky thread up to explain the situation. Not that it would have helped outside of DU or probably inside of DU, but I figure I've made 200 posts, at least, here explaining the the AWB had nothing to do with machine guns.

I think most of the moderators enjoy a lively discussion as much as the rest of us.

I think Mr. James has taken his cues from a decade of intentionally misleading propaganda that has been spread by people who are ignorant and afraid of guns.

But James is supposed to be a professional. He's supposed to check out his facts. He's ignorant AND a bad analyst.

6. Apparently the answer is no.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/politics/july-dec04/snapshot_9-13.html

SEN. JOHN KERRY: Police officers, police officers, begging the president all across our country, "keep this ban in place so we don't have to walk into a drug bust staring down the barrel of a military machine gun, of an Uzi or an A.K.-47." George Bush, when he ran for president, gave those officers his word. You see those badges on these officers? They mean something. There's nothing like the word between brother and sister within the brotherhood of law enforcement. And George Bush gave them his word that when it came time he was going to extend the ban. But when it came time to do it, when it came time to make a phone call, when it became time to fight, when it became time to lead, when it became time to stand up and ask America to do what was right, George Bush's powerful friends in the gun lobby asked him to look the other way, and he couldn't resist, and he said, "Sure."

And so tomorrow, for the first time in ten years when a killer walks into a gun shop, when a terrorist goes to a gun show somewhere in America, when they want to purchase an AK-47 or some other military assault weapon, they're going to hear one word: "Sure." Today George Bush chose to make the job of terrorists easier and make the job of America's police officers harder, and that's just plain wrong. John Edwards' and my plan for a safe America puts more police officers on our streets by restoring every last dime of the COPS program. (Applause)

We're also going to put 5,000 new prosecutors into our communities in order to help those police officers be able to fight crime and put criminals behind bars. We're going to take on gang violence with a zero-tolerance policy and a message to our young people that there is another path. My friends, George Bush made a choice today. And over these next days, I will be showing how these choices affect America and Americans. This is what presidential leadership is supposed to be about. But it's also a test of character. It is a test of character. In a secret deal, he chose his powerful friends in the gun lobby over police officers and families that he promised to protect.

The president made the wrong choice for Americans, and the American people are going to pay the price for his choice. He failed the test of leadership by saying that he supports an assault weapons ban, but then doing everything in his power to keep the Republicans from sending it to him. That is not what we expect in leadership from the president of the United States. (Applause) George Bush should stop hiding behind the Republicans in Congress. He should tell the American people the truth: That he had no intention of extending the assault weapons ban; that the gun lobbyists were absolutely correct when they publicly said, point blank, that they had a real friend in the Oval Office.

8. Gee, beevul
Guess pretty much everybody knows that they can be converted to auto-fire....even if our "pro gun democrats" want to pretend such a thing cannot happen.

"The misleading rhetoric gets extremely sickening after a while"
Tell us about it, beev. While you're at it, remind us what the courts have said about the Second Amendment.

Of course, all you've done is given us one more good reason why guns that can be easily converted ought to be banned...

13. Or who James Brady is?
Secondly, he should appear at a press conference with James Brady - the secret service agent who took a bullet for Ronald Reagan and whose name adorns the "Brady" assault weapons bill.

"former senior Democratic Party strategist" - suuure he was . . .more like CURRENT Republican strategist, seeing as how spouting off nonsense and pinning it on the Democratic Party is what he has done . . .
