GUNS IN THE NEWS--September 17, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Student fires gun at Gary school (IN)
"GARY, Ind. -- A student who police say fired a handgun inside a high school during a lunch period fight remained at large today even though he returned to the school with his mother.
A surveillance tape showed that a fight broke out Wednesday in the Wirt High School commons area, with the student who shot three bullets into the ceiling then fleeing the school, police said. No injuries were reported.
Investigators identified the student who shot the gun, but he could not be found Wednesday.
The student returned to Wirt today with his mother, and school officials showed the mother the videotape, police Lt. Roger Smith said. The mother then took her son from the school, evading police officers."

2. D.C. Gun Bill May Be Linked to Budget
registration required...and then Dianne Feinstein will know where you are! Bwahahahaha!
"A move to repeal virtually all the District's gun restrictions has received a boost in the Senate, where gun rights supporters led by Idaho Republican Sen. Larry E. Craig are seeking to get the measure passed as an amendment to the city's 2005 budget.
If the effort were to succeed, it would markedly increase the chances of the repeal passing Congress this fall. A similar measure in the House has more than enough co-sponsors to pass that chamber and has been promised a floor vote this fall by GOP House leaders.
Craig and pro-gun lobbyists are canvassing members of Mayor Anthony A. Williams (D) assailed the Republican-led push to undo the District's gun laws, which date to the early years of home rule in the city in the 1970s, saying that such a move would lead to more violence and bloodshed in the city.
Williams used his weekly news conference Wednesday to issue a rare challenge to lawmakers, reading the names of 14 District children who have been shot to death this year and asking whether Congress remembered them. "

Bin Laden and Al Qaeda may hate our freedoms...but they're school kids next to the gun lobby which REALLY hates them.

3. Authorities find ammo, guns in wake of standoff (GA)
Another one of those "law abiding responsible gun owners" we never have to worry about (ri-i-i-i-i-i-ight). Wonder how much this little celebration of the second amendment set back taxpayers?

"After a 14-hour standoff, Simms was convinced by a federal negotiator to come down from a gravel hopper on his family's land late Monday night, and he and his son were arrested and jailed on contempt-of-court charges.
According to the Athens County Sheriff's Office, a search of the hopper where Simms had made his stand turned up a high-powered rifle, a handgun and 1,000 rounds of ammunition.
Athens County Sheriff Vern Castle said Tuesday that Simms had told him prior to the standoff that he would not put up a fight when officers came to arrest him and his son Danny Simms II, on contempt-of-court charges.
"Danny Simms (Sr.) told me on the phone that he would offer 'token resistance,' were his words," Castle said. "His definition of 'token resistance' and mine must be different.""

5. Slain woman's family takes grief, questions to the street (MN)
"Grief poured onto a dark St. Paul street Wednesday night as the family of an 18-year-old woman who was fatally shot begged for information about her killer. A woman standing at the center of a cluster of women on the sidewalk in front of 939 Carroll Av. yelled, "Didn't someone know who he was?" as others wept.
The victim was dead of a gunshot wound when officers were called to the house at 10:19 p.m., said St. Paul Police Department spokesman Paul Schnell. Police did not release the victim's name.
A man wearing a black T-shirt was seen running from the back of the house, but so far no suspect has been identified, Schnell said."
