1. I agree with Bill Maher that gun crowd has an extra chromosone
and should just admit that this gun compulsion is like gambling and drugs. It's ludicrous to think these RBKA extremists are patriotic at this point since they favor fascist RepuKKKes and Zell Miller democrats besides it's also ludicrous that their m16's can take on government F16's.

2. A very myopic view of the issue

but hey if it suits you that's fine with me.

Once we are all disarmed and serving in Halliburton labor camps we can talk about this issue while busting rocks for the republican oligarchy.

6. It seems the vast majority of RBKA extremists are for Shrub
What can I say. It sure seems the vast majority of the gun nuts don't care about any freedoms except their gun fetish.

9. Categorical statements by you don't make it true

Just because the NRA is a political tool of the GOP does not mean that there are not democratic gun owners in this country.

18. You hit the nail right on the head, Bill.....
You'll notice we got nothing but excuses as to why our "pro gun democrats" can't say anything pro-Democrat on those RKBA boards.

3. I don't think that its right to say those kind of things about Sen. Kerry
Just because he admits to owning a Chi-com "assault" rifle. Especially on DU.

For the record, I don't believe Sen. Kerry has an extra chromosone.

8. Notice he didnt say he actually "owns" or "possesses"
that particular weapon.

"My favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam. I don't own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle."

If he was implying he owned one, wouldnt he say MY Communist Chinese assault rifle?

I dont think Kerry owns one. Im sure they will hammer him on this so we will find out soon enough but I dont think Kerry is voting against semi autos with a full auto sitting in his closet somewhere.

11. Next you'll be saying that picture of him with a shotgun is fake as well

oh well, some people just have to lie to themselves so as not to disturd their world view.

13. Why
Why do you consider what I said to be "lying to myslef"?

He never said he owns one explicitly. He said that weapon was A reminder of his time in Vietnam. Doesnt mean he owns one, does it?

I have no doubt Kerry is a gun owner, much to the chagrin of the few gun grabbers here. But I dont see Kerry voting for a ban on semi autos if he OWNS a full auto. Thats not lying to myself, thats just reading what he said.

12. That is true, he didn't say "my" rifle (exactly)...
... just like how the 2nd Amendment doesn't exactly say "the right of the militia to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed", (hint: it says "the People" - even though everyone knows that the People in the 1st, 4th, 9th, and 10th Amendments were different than the People mentioned in the 2nd ;)).

...but he was responding to a question offered by the ultra-right wing "Outdoor Life" magazine (one wonders why he'd even dignify them with an interview!)

Again, from the article:

<<The October edition of Outdoor Life will feature interviews with both presidential candidates. When asked about their favorite guns, President Bush responds: "My favorite gun is a Weatherby Athena 20 gauge." Mr. Kerry says (reminding us yet again where he was 35 years ago): "My favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam. I don't own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle." So Mr. Kerry's favorite gun is an "assault" rifle designed for war. Funny talk coming from a guy who just went ballistic over the end of the "assault" weapons ban. >>

"I don't own one now, but one of MY reminders of my service is..."

Come now - sounds like he claiming possession to me - and that's nothing to be ashamed of - is it?

--------------------------------------------------------

"I voted against the amendment because I believe that prohibiting certain types of weapons is problamatic. "
-Sen Feingold about an amendment to S.1805, which did not pass, that would renew the AWB

17. Ashamed no, inconsistent yes
It would be horribly incosistent if he owns a full auto rifle but votes to ban semi autos. And I dont think he is stupid enough to fall into that trap. Of course he was implying that he is solidly in support of gun rights but, that is not a lie. He owns guns for sure, but we dont know for sure if an assault rifle is among them, from what he said.

Its like if I said, one of my reminders of hunting was a single shot 20 gauge. Doesnt mean I own one, just means its a reminder.

20. Wonder why a "pro gun democrat" would post
Edited on Fri Sep-17-04 11:28 AM by MrBenchley
the right wing's distortion of an interview with John Kerry instead of the actual interview? Me neither...

http://www.outdoorlife.com/outdoor/news/article/0,19912,696240-1,00.html

"Kerry: Yes, I support extending the assault weapons ban. The weapons that are the subject of this ban are not used for hunting, and extending this ban will not infringe on the rights of any Americans to hunt, including those who hunt with semi-automatic shotguns. It will, however, help police deal with the violence that we are witnessing in too many American cities. Today, one in five law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty is killed with an assault weapon. Innocent citizens continue to be caught in automatic weapon crossfire on city streets. Simply put, I stand with the police officers who have called for extending the ban. Police officers who put their lives on the line every day should not be outgunned by the criminals they are seeking to stop. "

23. Locking
Having read the article I find this opinion piece has no place on DU. If you find the interview of value, feel free to post the actual interview as id'd by MrBenchley in the forum. If you stil feel this opinion piece is valuable, feel free to post it on someone else's site and use someone else's bandwidth to defame the Democratic candidate.

Again, the stated purpose of this website is to unselect George Bush.
