talked to a hugely freeped RKBAer I met while hiking today.
he was walking along the trail with a glock 23 on his hip. sneered at my ABB shirt, talked about how kerry was a gun 'poser'. it appears that he thinks kerry is going to take his guns away. i explained to him that kerry has no such plans, but i'd be happy if he enacted some such legislation. we then went out seperate ways.

1. I like to tell
those persons that are single issue (guns) voters that Dubya's bunch are already trying to destroy the Bill of Rights and ask them how long they think it will be before an armed populace is a "threat to the security of the Homeland".

2. You should have mentioned that Kerry is
a machine gun owner.

it appears that he thinks kerry is going to take his guns away. i explained to him that kerry has no such plans, but i'd be happy if he enacted some such legislation.

Perhaps he's concerned with Kerry's co-sponsorship of S.1431.

25. Apparently

Kerry: My favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam. I don’t own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle.

and not a currently functional firearm?

8. Where were you hiking?
I carry a handgun when out in the woods. We have a number of feral dogs around here because people drop unwanted pups in the country. Some of them are fairly large and won't hesitate to bite (or worse).

I've also found it handy out west, Arizona mostly, because of snakes and other wildlife that can attack people.

Let's also not forget two-legged predators. I live about an hour away from Owensboro, KY, a town of about 60,000. It's not large by any stretch. Firearms are banned when using the greenbelt walking/biking trails. In the last year there have een several rapes, numerous muggings, and two murders on the Greenbelt.

I can understand why the other hiker was packing.

9. Interesting...
some of the anti gun posters have always said disagreements in which a party was armed would result in a wild west shootout. Guess you were luck :)

Out of curiosity, where were you hiking? A national trail, state park, or local park? I hike on the AT all the time and have yet to encounter anyone packing heat.

Well, maybe a little :P If you don't mind sharing where on the AT have you done your hiking?

More on topic, I've only twice met hikers carrying guns. I've met hunters while I'm hiking, but that is a different situation.

13. The whole thing back in '91
VA was great. One of my favorite parts was Grayson Highlands State Park. The rhododendron were amazing and the ponies were cool too. Unfortunately I haven't managed to get back down that way since then.

if you have already been through this way, then you know how gorgeous it is.

Are you in NH? I did some hiking there too 2 summers ago. Another gorgeous state.

18. Hard to pin down a favorite
each state had something unique and special about it. Grayson Highlands was definitely a highlight. Emotionally speaking Mt. Moosilauke was a high point. Mt. Moosilauke is the first "big" mountain you hit along the trail in NH and one of the first mountains I ever climbed. When I reached that point I really felt that I was home. The Mahoosuc region in Maine is a very rugged and beautiful section. It had the wildest feel to it.

19. VA only allows CCW (with a permit)
which probably explains why you haven't seen any open carry. I've CCW'd on many a camping/hiking trip on North Massanutten and the Mt. Pleasant NSA. I haven't been to Mt. Rogers in about five years now (*sniff*), and the Roanoke-area trails in about four years (sigh).

A few years back the VA regs governing firearms in National Forests (which are under STATE law concerning hunting) was changed to allow CCW permit holders to carry CONCEALED loaded firearms.

http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+4VAC15-40-60

A. Department-owned lands west of the Blue Ridge Mountains and national forest lands statewide. It shall be unlawful to have in possession a bow or a gun which is not unloaded and cased or dismantled on all national forest lands statewide and on department-owned lands and on other lands managed by the department under cooperative agreement located in counties west of the Blue Ridge Mountains except during the period when it is lawful to take bear, deer, grouse, pheasant, quail, rabbit, raccoon, squirrel, turkey, or waterfowl on these lands.

(but)

G. The provisions of this section shall not prohibit the possession, transport and use of loaded firearms by employees of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries while engaged in the performance of their authorized and official duties, nor shall it prohibit possession and transport of loaded concealed handguns where the individual possesses a concealed handgun permit as defined in §18.2-308 of the Code of Virginia.

20. I thought last year...
the AG of VA forced the Park Service to update their laws so they are consistent with the state of VA.

I believe now you are allowed to open-carry on trails in VA, just like you can in any other part of the state. I will double check on this.

21. yeah -STATE parks
I think the flap was over open carry in state parks. (National Parks are still firearms-verboten without a) unloaded and dissasembled during transit, or b) a special hunter's permit to transport through the Park property, issued by the head ranger or something (like if you are accessing the national forest land in St. Mary's Wilderness from the BRP).

I remember the whole CCW thing was also caught up in the matter because VCDL challenged the VA Park people on their "no guns period" policy. Once the snowball started, the AG got into the act and issued his opinion.

I guess Republicans CAN be right twice a day and all. . .
