GUNS IN THE NEWS--September 20, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Dalzell domestic violence arrest leads to gun arsenal (SC)
Yeah, here's the kind of voter we should be pandering to....he sounds like a real charmer.

"DALZELL, S.C. -- Sumter County deputies seized an arsenal of 124 guns after responding to a domestic violence complaint involving a 78-year-old man.
A Department of Social Services case worker reported to police that Alex B. Deas had squeezed his wife's arm until the skin tore.
Deputies heard from family members about the gun collection and obtained a search warrant. A search turned up $100,000 worth of weapons and ammunition. The arsenal included a German practice grenade and a .308-caliber machine gun mounted in one of the upstairs bedrooms, Sheriff Tommy Mims said."

2. hhhmmmmmmm . . . part of the Brady Gun Law
calls for a waiting period to ascertain whether or not there's any domestic violence instances on the potential gun purchaser . . . a very valid issue.

. . . . . . .

3. Sadly, the waiting period was struck down
although a solid majority of voters favor it...

13. And so it's farewell to another pro gun troll....
"So Long, Tackleberry
It is a sad day for fans of crazed, gun-toting police officers. Veteran character actor David Graf has passed away, dying of a heart attack at a wedding in Arizona. This may not mean much to many people, but Graf, to us, was a hero: The man who brought Eugene Tackleberry to life through six Police Academy movies. Sure, he had a few other roles and a recent gig on The West Wing. But we’d like to think he’s entering heaven dressed in academy blue, and carrying an absurdly big handgun."

12. The waiting period portion of the Brady Bill
was an interim measure that was put in place while the NICS system was put together. It had nothing to do with domestic violence. It and the other interim measures of the Brady Bill expired sometime in 1998.

6. Illegal immigrants, weapons cache, stolen SUV discovered at Tucson motel
"Tucson Police responded to a Motel 6 along the highway on a shooting call, only to later discover 15 illegal immigrants jammed inside a few rooms.
Neighbors across the street from the motel saw four men running through this parking lot, shooting and called 911, but by that point, one man had been gunned down.
"I heard it and I said wow! and I came out here and that's when I saw everybody ducking and stuff," described neighbor Christina Burruel.
As well, a stolen SUV and a cache of weapons were found along with the immigrants, but investigators from the police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement are trying to piece it all together."

19. Gunman kills security guard; 2 wounded in 2 other shootings in Broward
"A security guard was killed and two other people were wounded in three separate shootings in central Broward, authorities said.
The fatal shooting occurred about 1 a.m. Saturday at The Oasis, an adult arcade tucked into a Lauderdale Lakes strip mall in the 4300 block of North State Road 7. A masked man walked into the arcade, confronted Kurt Orlosky and shot him at close range, said Veda Coleman-Wright, a Sheriff's Office spokeswoman. Investigators said the gunman may have left the scene in a four-door maroon, 1990s model Cadillac with shiny wheels.
A few minutes before Orlosky, 38, was shot, someone started firing a gun into the air outside a teen dance at the Los Soneros Dance Hall, about a mile away, Coleman-Wright said. Bystander Courtnee Little, 20, of Pompano Beach, who was standing in the club's parking lot in the 3700 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard, was hit in the leg by one of the errant bullets, Coleman-Wright said. Little was treated at Broward General Medical Center. He is expected to be released."
