"Assault Weapon" aquisition and manufacturing thread.
Edited on Mon Sep-20-04 09:37 PM by FatSlob
This is the "Assault Weapon" manufacturing thread. Please feel free to post information regarding your aquiring or manufacturing/assembling an "Assault Weapon" as defined by the now-defunct 1994 ban. Please discuss only personal experience, or aquisitions of which you have personal knowlege, such as a friend aquiring one. Tell us what you got, what "evil" features it has, and if you assembled it or purchased it. Feel free to comment upon the "assault weapons" made by others when they post about their weapons.

1. I assembled a former "post ban" into a new "no ban".
I took an Eagle Arms/Armalite rifle that I had assembled under the restrictions of the AWB and added a CAR telescoping stock to it. The carbine is a flat-top 16 inch barreled AR with a Cavalry Arms pistol grip, Rock River M4 upper, Rock River CAR telescoping stock, Rock River M4 handguards, ARMS flip up rear sight, detachable front sight, and a BSA red dot 1x scope. It is chambered for 5.56 NATO and is fed a regular diet of Israeli surplus M193 ammo through a mixture of Center, OK, Colt, and Bushmaster magazines.

3. Have you tried Wolf ammo yet?
I've had good success, but would like others' opinions.

4. Wolf ammo is the best bang for the buck.
Having been a party to some tests of it, I can say that it is smelly, filthy and ugly. However, it is VERY cheap. Some claim that the steel casing of the Wolf will cause premature wear on your extractor. I'm not sure about this. Even if it does, an extractor costs about ten bucks, which will be more than offset by the ammo cost savings. It fires at a lower velocity than M193, so it will shoot a little low. That is easy to compensate for. I have over 2000 rounds of Wolf on hand. I also recommend Silver Bear.

2. I've done a little modifying

Took two SKS's and atached ATI folders w/pistol grip. One was a Norinco, the other a Yugo. Also removed the fixed mags so they will accept the 30 rounders I just bought. Still have one of each in cosmoline. Glad pop was thinking ahead back in the 80's when the Norincos could be had for about $50.00. Did the same to a Mini-14 with a Butler creek rig.

I also did a mag extension on a 1300 and a 500. Added a tactical fold-up to the 500. Kept the pistol grips, front and rear on the 1300. I bought the 1300 in a LEGAL face-to-face transfer during the dark times. Got the sandard synthetic stock with it as well so I now have either a brush gun or HD shotgun on both because the plugs to make them legal for hunting are a snap to install.

Still prefer the coach gun for thick brush. Everything else gets the 1100 treatment or a Browning A5 or Model 11 I inherited.

5. locking - insert this into one of the thousand other AWB threads
or, better yet, take it to a forum that discusses weapons - this a forum that discusses policy and impact.
