GUNS IN THE NEWS--September 22, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Principal's firing follows pupil-gun response delay (PA)
"LEBANON - A middle school principal may have lost his job because of a delay in reacting to reports of a student bringing a gun to school.
Superintendent Marianne Bartley yesterday confirmed there was a delay in calling police and locking down the school, but rebutted a report that administrators waited two to three hours to initiate the crisis plan. Bartley would not elaborate on the delay.
She confirmed Monday night that Flickinger was not one of the administrators who contacted police about reports of a gun being in the school.
Other administrators initiated the school's crisis plan after learning from students that an unidentified 14-year-old boy had brought to school a gun, a knife and a bullet that didn't fit the gun, Bartley said. "

3. Mandan School Board deciding fate of student in BB gun incident (ND)
"The Mandan School Board expects to decide the fate of a 17-year-old student accused of bringing a BB gun to school and shooting another student with it.
Authorities say the incident happened September Ninth, and they say the boy told them he did not intentionally shoot the other student.
Principal Mark Andreson says the Board will meet tonight with school officials and decide whether he can return to school. "

4. Man Shoots Wife (dead), Mistakes Her for Monkey (Malasia)
Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 10:03 AM by Endangered Specie
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - A Malaysian man shot and killed his wife after he mistook her for a monkey picking fruit in a tree behind their house, the New Straits Times said on Wednesday.

The man, 70, is being held by police for causing death through recklessness after he fired a shotgun at what he thought was a monkey in a mangosteen tree on Monday, the newspaper said.

His wife, 68, had used a ladder to climb into the tree and was picking the tropical fruit when she was shot. She was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital, the paper said. The couple lived in central Malaysia and had raised 13 children.

5. Guns from Millbrae theft turn up in S.F.
Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 10:25 AM by MrBenchley
"Police discovered the guns along with more than 20 others while executing a search warrant Thursday on Staples Avenue in the city's Sunnyside neighborhood, according to Lt. Rick Parry with the San Francisco Police Department's narcotics division.
Officers arrested a man living at the house, Robert Guay, 55, on weapons and drug charges, after the search turned up more than a pound of "crystal ice," a type of methamphetamine, police said.
Authorities have remained tight-lipped about Thursday's arrest and declined to say whether Guay is considered a suspect in the theft of 130 guns, reported stolen last month from Annie's Attic Self Storage.
A combination of pistols, rifles, shotguns and revolvers, valued at $100,000, the guns were taken from the federally licensed facility sometime in the last three years. "

Between the bobo who lost track of these guns for THREE YEARS, and the other fuckwit caught with the 388 guns, there's two very good reasons to have Congressional hearings into the corrupt gun industry.

6. Editorial: Praying for guns to stay off the streets (PA)
"In the span of just over two weeks, five young men were killed in the city of Chester. The motive for the shootout on Sept. 4 is believed to be a domestic dispute over childcare.
The motives for the Sept. 15 and Sept. 19 shootings aren’t clear, although robbery is suspected in one of them.
The one common factor among the victims is the way they died. They were all victims of guns."

7. Keep guns out of the wrong hands (IN)
"Our position is: The state should give police the tools they need to keep guns away from the mentally ill.
The need to change the law became clear in the wake of the Aug. 18 shooting death of Indianapolis Police Officer Timothy "Jake" Laird. He was killed during Kenneth Anderson's rampage through a Southside neighborhood. Anderson also shot to death his mother and wounded four other officers.
One of the sadder elements of the story is that police had actually confiscated Anderson's guns in January when his mother complained about his threatening behavior. Even though Anderson was diagnosed with schizophrenia, police returned his guns two months later, citing the lack of authority to keep the weapons. A review by the city's legal staff has since determined that IPD followed proper procedures in deciding to return Anderson's guns.
Now the legislature also needs to act by giving police the legal tools they need to stop another deadly assault before it begins."

8. Lawyer: Man Bought Guns To Protect Cavs Player
Another innocent collector <snicker>

"CAMDEN, N.J. -- Lawyers for the stepfather of Cleveland Cavaliers guard Dajuan Wagner said he was buying guns to protect the player and his mother two years ago.
Prosecutors are alleging Wagner's stepfather, Leonard Paulk, bought some 20 weapons in 2002 as they try to prove he was involved in a drug conspiracy.
While Paulk is not charged with any gun crimes, the 34-year-old faces allegations he helped launder more than $1.6 million in drug revenues at casinos in Atlantic City and Mississippi."

Gary Juneau, 34, continues to recover after a high-powered rifle bullet pierced his leg Labor Day weekend.
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents said Monday that they still have no leads in the case."

11. Man Held In Cousin's Shooting (AR)
"A Fort Smith man was arrested Tuesday in the shooting of his cousin, police said.
Officers arrested Emmanuel “Tweety” Davis, 20, in the shooting of Robert Jordan, 19, of Fort Smith, Fort Smith police detective Ron Lockhart said. Jordan was shot in the right leg and was being treated Tuesday evening at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center, he said.
The incident occurred about 4 p.m. Tuesday, outside Davis’ home in the 4500 block of North Avenue. Lockhart said the men argued about a girlfriend, and Davis, who was standing in the front yard, shot Jordan, who was in the street in front of the house.
At least three people witnessed the shooting, Lockhart said. The witnesses reported that Davis tried to fire several shots, but the gun jammed and he was able to fire only one shot."

12. Shootings at shelter work of especially cruel people (AR)
"For the second time in recent weeks, intruders entered the Animal Orphanage in Bauxite after closing hours. When they left, two dogs were dead, two were injured and many were wandering loose on the property.
Employees arriving to open the facility Monday morning found the two dead animals right away. Many of the other dogs were visibly traumatized by what had transpired in the preceding hours. In the previous incident, one dead dog was found and others were apparently frightened by what they had seen.
The animals' deaths appeared to have been caused by multiple gunshots.
What kind of individual could perpetrate such an act? It takes an especially cruel person to inflict harm on defenseless animals, just as it would on an innocent child or a frail, elderly person."
