If you're flying with firearms
Never surrender your combination or key to your gun case if the case is out of your sight, even to TSA officers unless they have a warrant. Open the case for them to inspect or hand them the key/combination only when you are present with the case, then re-lock it. (It has been my experience that they will allow you to open the case, saving you from compromising the security of combinations. There is also no provision tha prohibits you from resetting the combination after the inspection if you have conveyed the combination to a TSA officer. Let them get their feeling hurt if you change the combination. You're protecting your property.) If the case is in the bowels of the airport, request that the officials either take you to the case or that they bring the case to you. Remember, anyone can be a crook. How do you know it's a TSA official on the phone at the counter? It wouldn't be the first time airline employees or non-employees looted luggage.

As with any LEO or agent, be courteous and accomodate them within the law unless you want a ton of hassles.

You don't want to become a felon for being helpful.

<snip>If the passenger is not present during screening, and the container must be opened, the air carrier is required to locate the passenger so that the passenger will be present during screening.

2. Its good advice. (that I didnt follow once)
Edited on Wed Sep-22-04 10:36 AM by Fescue4u
About a year ago I checked my firearm and then went about my business at the airport.

I was sitting at the gate eating my breakfast when an airport official came along, and asked me in a quiet voice if I had declared my gun.

I told him that I did (and I did), and then he asked me for the combination so they could check it.

I gave it to him, and then before the flight left, I was pulled off the flight to speak with an airport cop. Thats when the butterflies started as I wondered if something nefarious had happened.

It all turned out ok. The airline agent had just put my gun box through the wrong chute (the uninspected chute), and xrays later indicated a gun. For whatever reason, because this had happened a police report had to be filed and they just needed my personal info for their files in this "incident".

I made the flight, got to my destination on time and with my gun. But I decided after that I won't divulge the combo after the case leaves my sight.

4. Oh yes.
I've flown proably a dozen times since then, about half the time with a firearm and I've never had any additional major problems.

I've had a few minor problems with agents who do not understand the firearm procedures, but it was nothing that a polite conversation and advice from other agent couldnt resolve in a few minutes.

7. Oh my GOD!!!
I've been to New York several times and stupidly neglected to take a gun with me! Surely I must be dead or robbed or raped by now?

No?

Errrr...........then I must have just been lucky.

I genuinely pity someone who feels that they cannot visit somewhere without taking a gun with them.

Incidentally - if your profession or other reasons mean it is necessary for you to enter hugely high-risk crime areas then I apologise for these comments, but if you're just taking a gun because you're scared then I suggest that you have a think about the media's portrayal of the likelihood of crime versus the reality.

8. NEVER fly into NYC with a pistol
Edited on Thu Sep-23-04 02:23 PM by Fescue4u
Unless you a NYC resident with all the paperwork. Being a New York state resident with the proper permit is not good enough to keep you out of jail.

Its the only city in the nation where you'll get arrested for checking a gun at the airport counter if you are not a city resident and have a permit.

Even NY state residents who reside outside of NYC who have proper permits cannot fly out of the 3 the major airports, without being thrown in the slammer. Why? because they only have a NY state permit, not a NYC permit (which they cant get anyway).

But then again, Im proably giving them to much credit by implying thought.

I could always use more laughs.

In the meantime I'll just keep marveling at our Bernie Goetz wannabe...

Why do you suppose he thinks he needs a gun for New York?

who posts mindless crap on the internet at places like highroadrage and freerepublic...you know, the sort of shithead who creams his jeans over guns, hates everybody but white rural Christians, can't keep his lies straight and thinks Chimpy is a jenius for crap like putting assault weapons back on the market.

16. Of course, but then RKBA types are known for their wit....
It's a regular laff riot where RKBAers hang out...

"Illinois: Shooting at State Capitol!
Illinois' Governor, Rod Blagoyovich, is a rabid anti-gunner and may try to use this event as outlined in the following news report to ram more Draconian gun laws through the Illinois House and Senate in Springfield and make Mayor Daley happy....OTOH, if we're to believe the left, we have a sitting president who started an entire war for oil or vengeance or because he's on medication or(insert nefarious scheme/reason here). As such that same group, at least, shouldn't find it that difficult to believe someone like Schumer would see offing a few hicks in fly-over country to further his agenda as acceptable. "

"The document, reviewed by the Daily News, said Ward sent his ex-wife a CD that mentions killing both Bush and Democratic rival John Kerry Hmmm. Kinda shoots holes in my original theory about a "Sportsman for Kerry".

"Now I know that CCW in NYC is pretty much out of the question, but does someone know what other options a person has in New York City? OC spray, knives or stun guns? Any extra restrictions for when the person is on the subway, or other public transport?...Simple, if you are a multi-millionaire, you just call up the NYPD grease the right palms and they'll hand delivery a Carry permit to you. If you're not, nobody cares if you live or die....Best option: Don't go the the d*#n place! Take your money somewhere else."

"One thing I am s-o-o-o proud of my father for was moving us out of that cesspool known as the Northeast/NYC to the sunny skies of Texas (aka America)...."

... so this random collage of opinions you don't like does not support the point that you were trying to make about pro-gunners and their supposed lack of wit.

10. Why?
Why do you wear a seatbelt? Isnt the 65 mph speed limit safe enough for you ;)

Personally, I don't carry a gun for any terrorism reason. Of course it could be useful in the case of wide spread panic resulting from terrorism.

No, in the places most likely to incur an attack you are barred from carrying anyway.

The Gungeon is for discussion of Gun policy and effects, not a how to or a swap meet. As most regular DU RKBAers already frequent forums dedicated to gun utility I see no need to carry the conversation over to here.

Thanks
