As Arab children are buried, anger toward Hamas grows
Palestinians speak of disarming group as its tactics unleash thunder of Israeli jetsBy ORLY HALPERN

Wednesday, September 28, 2005 Page A18

Special to The Globe and Mail

JABALYA, GAZA STRIP -- Outside the hovels of the Jabalya refugee camp opposite the blood-speckled curb where 20 Palestinians died from an explosion during a gun-toting Hamas celebration parade last week, stood neat rows of white plastic chairs under a long green-coloured mourning tent -- all courtesy of Hamas.

But Fawzi Wadee, who just returned from the funeral of his 10-year-old son, was unimpressed with the gesture of support.

The unemployed 32-year-old father of four felt no gratitude toward Hamas, which called his son 'a martyr,' blaming the Israelis for last week's explosion. Mr. Wadee, in fact, pins the blame on Hamas for the death of his son, who succumbed yesterday morning to wounds in his head from three shards of metal.

"I'm angry at the Hamas," said Mr. Wadee, his voice low from lack of sleep due to long stays at the hospital and restless nights as low-flying Israeli fighter jets screamed across the Gaza Strip in a series of retaliatory assaults. "Before I supported them. Now I don't."

2. What's the difference?
A Palastinian walks on the bus with a vest full of explosives.
A Isreali flies a F-16 and drops a 1000lb bomb on a apartment complex.
What's the difference?
The Isreali can do it again.

6. Unfortunately, Sir
The support and good wishes of a sizeable minority of the populace confers a certain political "heft", that renders the question of whether it is thought to be legitimate by you, or me, or some other person not directly involved, rather beside the point....

10. Hamas is well liked
as they are also a major charitable organization, and have saved many Palestinian lives.

Life is not black and white.

Bush's rhetoric about 'terrorists' is useless outside the Repub circles in the US

15. A few weeks ago there was a thread on I/P
on a Norwegian polling group and it seemed to show about 30-40 % support for Hamas depending on the question. It was hard to tell how much support for Hamas was coming because they were seen as not corrupt versus their tactics being seen as resulting in gaining Gaza. It'll be interesting seeing if the next elections mirror the results of the last local elections (about 35% support for Hamas) or if this parent and his view will start becoming more common /changing some thinking about Hamas, at least the militant side of it. It's next to impossible to get a beat on it and what the voters will do a few months from now.

17. The result of the elections will be the interesting bit.
I believe myself that a good deal of the pother we
are watching now is done in the hope of influencing
the outcome one way or another.

sections of the Geneva Convention rules about engagements relating to militants or military using civilian property. It was in regard to the Hamas rocket attacks that hit an Israeli school, then Israel targetted a Palestinian school it believed was used by militants. Luckily no one was killed on either side in regard to the school attacks. As I recall the GC citation, it was not against GC to target civilian properties being used by militants, subject to some specific restraints. If I could remember the thread I would post it.

Yes innocent people can get killed by any variety of armaments

24. The difference being...
the Isrealis kill more innocent civilians (while getting thier legitimate target).

When the USAF did it in Iraq, we complained. When IAF does it in the West Bank, we make excuses.

Hamas barbarism does not excuse Isreali barbarism.
