Church attack motivated by 'economic distress'
The eldest daughter of the Jewish man who detonated firecrackers inside the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth on Friday night told police that the act was motivated by "economic distress."

The incident in the northern Israeli Arab city triggered riots that resulted in the injury of 13 police officers and 13 local residents.

According to police, the Jewish man, Haim Eliyahu Havivi, 44, had a history of mental illness. The assailants were not believed to be linked to any ultra-nationalist Jewish group.

The Havivi family will be brought Saturday evening before a court for a remand extension.

According to Amakim District Police chief Commander Yaakov Zigdon, the family members got hold of the firecrackers in the Tel Aviv area, and a small gas canister was found in the Tel Aviv hotel in which they were staying before the attack.

8. hard to tell isn't it
"Haim Eliahu Habibi told a court he did not hate Christians or Muslims, saying he targeted the church to draw attention to a child custody issue"

snip
"I am deeply sorry. I am not against anyone. I hope we will be forgiven," she said.

snip

Media reports say three of the couple's other children were taken into care by social services in the past.
snip

(whatever, a deeply troubled family with seemingly multiple financial and other issues)
