Hamas says special security unit will start operation next week
Hamas announced Saturday that a new security unit headed by a senior militant wanted by Israel will begin operating later this month, intensifying a power struggle with the rival Fatah Party.

The controversial unit will back existing security forces in a crackdown on illegal construction along the coast of the Gaza Strip on May 14, said Khaled Abu Hilal, a spokesman for the Hamas-run Interior Ministry.

The announcement came shortly ahead of a meeting between Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, of Fatah.
