Poll shows most Israelis prefer talks on captured soldier

A majority of Israelis back negotiations with Palestinian militants over the release of a captured soldier and would agree to free prisoners held by the Jewish state to secure his release, a poll has shown.

Israeli warplanes pounded Gaza on Friday, setting ablaze the Interior Ministry offices of the Hamas-led Palestinian government in a widening military effort to secure the release of 19-year-old Corporal Gilad Shalit, who was captured by militants in a cross-border raid on Sunday.

A survey published by Israeli daily newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth showed 53 per cent of Israelis polled said the country should hold negotiations to secure his release, while 43 per cent backed a military operation.

Egypt's Al-Ahram newspaper says the Hamas Islamist group has given "conditional approval" for Shalit's release.
