Israeli court rejects Palestinian petition to save Jerusalem land from settlers

Date: 01 / 04 / 2009 Time: 12:17

Jerusalem – Ma’an – The Israeli Magistrate court in Jerusalem rejected a Palestinian petition on Tuesday to confirm their ownership of land in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of Jerusalem that is also claimed by Israeli settlers.

The land belongs to Darwish Hijazi. His lawyer presented ownership documents as a part of the petition.

The court rejected Hijazi’s request to stop settler activity on his property, including the eviction of two families (Al-Ghawi and Hannoun) who live in the area. However, the judge did not rule out the possibility to use documents presented by Hijazi in other land cases in Sheikh Jarrah.

According to Hatim Abdul-Qadir, the Palestinian Prime Minister’s advisor on Jerusalem affairs, “The Hijazi case was separate from another case filed by Al-Ghawi and Hannoun families against the decision to evacuate them from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah. The same documents were presented to the court in both cases, and the second case has not been decided on yet.”

Abdul-Qadir said that the court’s decision was unjust that it did not take into account the credible ownership documents presented by Hijazi, who plans to appeal the case to Israel’s High Court of Justice.

1. What rotten luck!
Don't bother taking it to Israel's High Court of Justice. An oxymoron if ever I heard one.
