Palestinian fishing boat explodes near Israeli coast
A Palestinian fishing boat from Gaza, floating illegally near the Israeli coast, exploded Monday morning when hit with IDF artillery.

IDF sources estimated that the booby-trapped boat was activated by remote control and meant to explode near an Israeli Navy vessel or a coastal community.

A naval patrol followed the boat for about an hour and spotted no people on board. As it was several hundred meters off the Gaza shore and heading north the boat exploded.

None of the soldiers was injured and no damage was reported.

2. yes, yes. a boat loaded with explosives and no crew
headed for the Israeli shore, is all about fishing. And it's completely justified in any case because of Israeli actions. Brilliant.

4. Well, they shelled it and it blew up.
I have heard that artillery can make things blow up, and I'm not sure how they knew what blew it up, the artillery or explosives on board. But either way, it seems kind of feckless. How was it supposed to be made to blow up at the right moment? Was it being observed? More information would help one interpret.

5. Oddly,
the Hebrew version of this article makes no mention of the boat being fired upon - just that it approached an IDF ship and exploded. I should note that I've caught some pretty major inaccuracies in ynetnews translations before (though they've been getting less frequent) so I tend to believe the Hbrew version - sepcially as the reports in both the Jerusalem Post and Haaretz corroberate that (in fact, the latter specifically states the boat was not fired upon).

It's assumed the boat and the detonation were remote-controlled.

7. That'd be a massive mistranslation...
I can understand a sentence being mistranslated, but in this case it'd be bringing things like firing artillery into the translation when they weren't even there in the original. The Ha'aretz article makes much more sense, as when I read the OP earlier today, I was surprised that anyone would think there wasn't something a bit strange about the ynetnews account of what happened...

8. I've seens ome pretty weird translations from them
which should have had someone asking "wait is this right?" - though in this case, I suggest someone jsut slipped when writing the English version rather than an out-and-out translation (granted, it doesn't say much for their quality control)

9. Totally offtopic question...
Are you using a laptop, or just a computer with a really crappy keyboard? It's just that yr usually one of the most typo-free posters here, and tonight it's like yr using my work keyboard, where the space key and one or two others gets stuck and my emails come out looking like 'Wantt o gofor a somke andac offee? Screwthis*&&E# k yeboard!!!! !'

btw, the whole translation issue makes me want to pick up again on trying to learn both Hebrew and Arabic, but until they get their acts together and start going from left to right, it's all just too much hard work for me :)

11. I usually have a few typos
I just normally catch them before hitting "submit". This time I was in a bit of a rush, so I didn't notice (the annoyingly persistant cold I've caught doesn't help either).

10. Well I don't know.
Don't have a position to defend, don't know what the problem is, or if there is a problem, it just seemed odd, as you say.
