Pro-Israel lobbyist hits back at prosecutors
<snip>

"A pro-Israel lobbyist cleared of espionage-related charges by a U.S. judge lashed out at his accusers in a TV interview broadcast Wednesday in Israel.

Steven Rosen, formerly of the America Israel Public Action Committee, told Israel's Channel 10 TV that the charges against him were part of an anti-Israel, anti-Jewish search for Israeli "spies under every bed."

On Monday, Judge T.S. Ellis III dismissed the charges against Rosen and Keith Weissman, both of whom worked for AIPAC. The case against them was mired in federal court for four years. They were accused of obtaining sensitive defense information regarding U.S. policy toward Iran and disclosing it to reporters and an Israeli official.

Rosen charged that the allegations against him were part of a larger plot among lower levels of the government to persecute Jews.

While expressing relief that the charges had been dropped, he said that from one point of view, it was a shame that no trial had taken place.

"What it would have shown is that I did nothing wrong," he said. "Who did something wrong is the people who brought this case, not just that they were incorrect, but that the attitude they had about Jews, Israel, AIPAC, was completely false, and unfortunately, a lot of that nonsense is still out there."

6. Why is he an idiot?
Is he incorrect in anything he said? After all the prosecution was dropped. If a pro-Arab lobbyist had been arrested and accused of spying for Saudi or Lebanon or Egypt and then the prosecution was dropped, would you call that person an idiot for railing against his arrest in the first place?

8. Or if it was a left-winger accused of spying for Russia in the 50s-
or nowadays perhaps for Cuba or Venezuela?

'Innocent until proved guilty' must apply to those whose views we dislike, as well as those we like. Leftists and liberals are, and always have been, in too much danger of being treated as guilty of treason on the basis of our opinions, to encourage similar attitudes to our opponents.

Ogden Nash satirized the McCarthyites:

"Our fathers claimed, by obvious madness moved,
Man's innocent until his guilt is proved.
They might have known, had they not been confused.
He's innocent until he is accused."

Let's not fall into the same trap.
