'Hamas risking Operation Cast Lead II'
Edited on Mon Jun-08-09 12:16 PM by Fozzledick
If Hamas continues to assist terrorist groups with attacks against IDF soldiers, it will risk facing "Operation Cast Lead II," a top IDF commander in Gaza threatened on Monday.

Lt.-Col. Avinoam Stolevitch's comments came after a group of around 10 Palestinian gunmen armed with "huge amounts of explosives" launched a failed Gaza border assault at the Karni Crossing earlier in the day.

"We are slowing beginning to understand the magnitude of (the threat from the Gaza Strip)," Stolevitch told Army Radio, adding his evaluation that the terrorists had planned a "large explosion… to provide cover for a kidnapping."

A security source told The Jerusalem Post. that the terror cell used the cover of morning fog for their attempt, as well as booby-trapped horses. At least four terrorists were killed in the ensuing exchange of fire with the IDF. No Israeli soldiers were wounded in the incident.

The terror cell belonged to the Janud Ansar Allah (Soldiers Loyal to Allah) organization, a small group which is linked to Iran and Hizbullah, the security source added.

Members of the cell, some of whom had suicide bomb belts strapped around their bodies, led the horses from trucks and began planting explosive devices along the fence. They were identified by IDF soldiers on patrol, of Golani's 13th Battalion. The gunmen proceeded to open fire on the troops, while mortar fire from deep within the Gaza Strip was also directed at the soldiers.

I guess things were getting too peaceful for Hamas, they're still hungry for another "great victory".

1. Frankly, nobody in Hamas has any interest in provoking anything at this point
Whoever or whatever this is all about -- Janud Ansar Allah didn't exist until about 52 minutes ago.

It's like when * said about Iraqi Sunnis and Shi'ites, "I thought they were all Muslims?"

2. Let me just be clear
Are both you and the author seriously suggesting that Hezbollah and Hamas are helping each other?

5. Are you really trying to imply that Iran's proxy mercenaries don't work together?
Really?
Or that an attack of this magnitude could possibly have been carried out without Hamas' approval and cooperation? Really??

more from the article:

"Hamas did not carry out this attack but they certainly provide general coverage for these small groups," the source continued, adding that it was too soon to know whether the cell had planned to kidnap soldiers.

...

Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Monday afternoon praised the army's "effectiveness" in foiling the attack, and said it was quite possible that one of the aims of the assault was to kidnap an IDF soldier, a claim made by Hamas television.

...

Ismail Haniyeh, who heads Gaza's Hamas government, praised the attackers as "martyrs," and said the violence confirmed Israel's "aggressive intentions" toward the Palestinians.

11. It's always humorous.
Why, just to think that Sunnis and Shi'ites could work together.

It's as silly as the idea of Hitler and Stalin actually signing a treaty, or of Roosevelt sitting down and dealing with Stalin. Or Nixon going to China.

Completely absurd on the face of it. But just on the face of it, of course.

6. Um -- yes, they are.
Have been for years. This isn't a secret. It's not something either has tried to hide. They were providing Hamas with training and arms before "Cast Lead" and they're trying to again.

The notion that Shiites and Sunnis ABSOLUTELY CAN'T work together is as simple-minded as the notion that there's no distinction between Muslims. Hamas and Hezbollah have a shared enemy.

4. I am sure "someone" is hungry for something
Seeing as how Hezbollah lost seats in yesterdays election in Lebanon, attention of "defense" forces can be turned to easier targets

7. Hamas: Gaza attack 'contradicts Palestinian interest'
The Palestinian security organizations in the Gaza Strip, and especially the Hamas government's internal security force, have launched an investigation into Monday morning's attempted terror attack near the Karni crossing.

Hamas is interested in making it clear that any activity which may harm the lull in the Strip must be avoided, particularly in light of the increased global pressure on Israel to open the goods crossings and ease the siege imposed on the Strip, which was also expressed in US President Barack Obama's recent speech to the Muslim world in Cairo.

Sources in Gaza estimated that the attack was carried out by members of the "Army of Islam" organization, which is in a conflict with Hamas, in cooperation with individual elements affiliated with al-Qaeda. The organization, however, refrained from assuming responsibility for the attack so as not to be dragged into a direct conflict with Hamas. An unknown organization named "the army of Allah's supporters" claimed responsibility instead.

12. Analyst: Hamas knew about Gaza attack
Hamas almost certainly knew about Monday's large-scale terror attack on the Gaza border involving trucks, bomb-laden horses and suicide bombers, a veteran terrorism analyst told The Jerusalem Post on Monday.

"I think it's a bit much to assume that Hamas wouldn't know about trucks and horses packed with explosives, or about a terror operation of this magnitude. The known technique by Hamas is to blame others for the attacks," said Dr. Ely Karmon, a senior research scholar at both the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism and the Institute for Policy and Strategy. The institutes are at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya.

Iran and Hizbullah both had an interest in inflaming the situation on the Gaza border, and may have activated the terror cell with Hamas's consent, Karmon added.

His comments appeared to be in line with a report by a security source, who said on Monday that the Janud Ansar Allah (Soldiers Loyal to Allah) organization, a small group which is linked to Iran and Hizbullah, carried out the attack.
