Thousands of Palestinians demonstrated in the central Gaza Strip against the Palestinian Authority's failure to lift a freeze on charities linked to Hamas.
More than 2,000 people gathered in the impoverished Nusseirat refugee camp after Friday noon prayer. The marchers carried banners reading "Does the national interest lie in starving the poor and the destitute?", "No to the policy of starving the Palestinian people to make them bend."
"Since monthly aid from an Islamic organization stopped, nobody has knocked on our door to hand out food to my children," said Um Said, a 35-year-old mother of six who said her husband passed away several years go.
She blasted the authority's decision not to uphold a March 21 high court's decision to unfreeze the charities assets as "cruel."
The authority's decision to freeze the accounts of some 40 Islamist charities in August 2003 had come in response to a US demand to clamp down on the Islamist armed group.
