Israel says will reroute part of fence
http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/spages/445720.html

Israel Defense Forces Deputy Chief of Staff Major General Gabi Ashkenazi said Wednesday the army will act in accordance with the High Court of Justice's order to alter 30 kilometers of the West Bank separation fence's route northwest of Jerusalem to minimize hardship to Palestinians. The army will submit an alternate route for the barrier in the near future.
................
"The route disrupts the delicate balance between the obligation of the military commander to preserve security and his obligation to provide for the needs of the local inhabitants," the ruling said.

"The route that the military commander established for the security fence... harms the local inhabitants in a severe and acute way while violating their rights under humanitarian and international law," the court said.
...................
The problem with the barrier in this area is not its actual existence but its route, since about 12,000 acres of Palestinian land would remain on the Israeli side, and another 600 acres will be confiscated for the barrier itself, he added.

The IDF has said it would set up four gates in this section of the barrier to allow landowners access to their farms but Palestinians in other areas have said the permit process is often too restrictive
llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

I greatly appreciate the rule of law. Kinda wish we still had it here.

5. The barrier is not "around" Israel..
that claim is patently false, and so easily proved to be false that if not a deliberate mis-statement of the facts, it is a revealing insight to your lack of knowledge on the topic.

9. You are correct
it isn't "around" anything. It is "between".

Thank you for pointing that out in such a straight forward manner.

10. You are incorrect...
If the barrier was "between", it'd be between Israel and the West Bank. But it's not, not unless you believe chunks of the West Bank are actually Israel...

14. Not at all...
Edited on Thu Jul-01-04 08:07 AM by Violet_Crumble
It's not between Israel and the West Bank. Is that clear enough? If not, try this. If I build a fence deep inside my neighbours yard and then tell everyone I built it between my land and theirs, they'll tell me that's as bullshit as trying to say that the barrier Israel is building is between Israel and the West Bank...

15. So you are saying it is suspended in that air?
You are not sticking to the talking points...you should be referring to it as a wall not a fence.

The barrier is not on the Green Line

it is definitely between Israel and not Israel

Its postion is exactly the kind of thing that happens when someone takes unilateral action. Unilateral action usually makes people grumpy.

11. Short sound-byte #11257
Edited on Thu Jul-01-04 07:12 AM by Violet_Crumble
Short sound-bytes don't have to make any sense, which is why sound-byte #8456: 'But Israel is the only TRUEEE democracy in the Middle East!!!' often appears shortly after other nonsensical and blatantly false sound-bytes....

Just out of curiousity, seeing as how you must believe that Jordan wishes to wipe Israel, the totally innocent and non-expansionist respecter of rights of the indigenous population that was within what is now its borders during it's creation, can you point to the policy of the Jordanian govt that is saying that Israel must be wiped off the face of the earth? Strangely enough, I haven't been able to find it, what with the record of lukewarm to warm relations and collusion between Jordan and Israel, and with peace treaties and all that ;)

6. The ruling
has affirmed Israel's right for the wall as a defensive measure. If the Hague ruling due in about 9 days does otherwise, it will have missed the international law of self-defense which is the right of every nation.

12. It might be...
The last paragraph where the IDF said it'd put four more gates in to allow landowners access to their own land doesn't bode well. Rather than continue with the exorbitantly expensive cost of building a wall inside the West Bank, the wiser move would be to announce that the already constructed bits would be removed and rebuilt along the Green Line, and to carry out that plan. To do that would remove all criticisms of the path of the wall, it'd make the ICJ ruling moot, and would prove beyond a doubt that the construction of the wall has to do with Israel's security and isn't a way of annexing parts of the West Bank where settlements are...

17. The gates are also a joke
As instantly predicted, and shown in several humanitarian studies in retrospect.

In most cases, settler violence, IDF whims etc prevent access. In some others, gates claimed to exist, don't.
