Israel may give soldiers pot
Israel may give soldiers pot
August 5, 2004 - 8:49AM

Israeli soldiers suffering from combat stress after tours of duty in the Palestinian territories could soon be treated with cannabis to relieve their symptoms, the Maariv daily reported.

The mental health department of the Medical Corps is set to begin tests in the next few days on volunteers suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after reserve duty, the paper said.

A scientist who will help conduct the experiment heads a research team which discovered that cannabis helped mice which had suffered physical stress and even reduced the risk of stroke..........

The IDF will soon begin using cannabis to treat soldiers suffering from combat stress, the military said Wednesday.

An army statement said the military medical corps and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem would begin treating victims of post-traumatic stress - commonly known as shell shock - with THC, the active ingredient in the cannabis plant. It said the treatment would begin on an experimental basis.

"The use of THC as part of the treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder was approved by military and civilian committees relevant to the subject," the statement said.

An IDF spokesman said treatment would be given to both conscript soldiers and reservists. ..........

Meth is one thing, but pot has no medical use.

5. it works OK
for relieving the stress of traffic jams, mortgage payments and domestic disagreements, for relieving teh stress of shooting at children armed with rocks or driving over someone with a bulldozer, or demolishing someone's house while they're in it...that might take intravenous GHB, and loads of it.

6. What does this have to do with I/P?
I don't see that it is raising any issues that relate to the conflict.

12. Their health
is hardly of interest here. It doesn't impact the conflict at all, as it is proposed for therapy, and off-duty use.

"Israeli soldiers suffering from combat stress after tours of duty in the Palestinian territories could soon be treated with cannabis to relieve their symptoms, the Maariv daily reported."

Those suffering from stress "after tours of duty in the Palestinian territories"... in other words are no longer on-duty. Suffering from stress, as a medical condition, could be treated with cannabis.

I am very interested in the soldiers emotional stability, although their recuperation may include treatments which would not be recommended while on-duty.

The soldier's lives are important to me, as is their emotional stability, although I am living close to the sea, and not in Gaza. They defend Israel not the settlers in the WB or Gaza. The settlers provide their own security.
