feb. 29th 2004

the bulldozers came unexpectantly. in the morning, without prior warning the machines were uprooting olive trees and pushing dirt around. the villagers came to protest. they sat in front of the bulldozers or stood in the olive groves. soldiers guarding the machines violently removed the people defending their lands.

three days into the protests two men were shot dead with live ammunition, an older man died of a heart attack from the tear gas and a young man is now brain dead because a rubber bullet was shot betweeen his eyes. today the bulldozers have stopped by order of the courts but the defense minister has said the wall should continue to be built 24 hours a day.

3. there is bias on both sides
but I have chosen a side -- and it's not pro-Israeli. The current government is exercising the most radical and profoundly short-sighted bad public policy imaginable.

Israel, they don't hate you because you're beautiful -- they hate you because you are ugly to the bone. It's really sad that religious and cultural extremists on both sides have created the mess that ordinary people have to live in, both Israeli and Palestinian, but it's not the Palestinians who are building the wall. It's a profoundly shameful situation, and I think it is profoundly shameful that we give Israel a pass on virtually everything they do as a government, including 63 U.N. violations.

Little Green Footballs my ass.

5. Locking
Per I/P guidelines:

Please use discretion when referencing obviously biased or factually questionable material. Vanity websites are generally not as credible as the New York Times, the Washington Post or the UK Guardian and are likely to be locked. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself is the author readily identifiable and likely to be cited by the mainline world press or encountered in an alternate format (mass-published book, academic journal, newspaper article, radio or TV show).
