India criticises Israel over Palestine
India criticises Israel over Palestine
Fakir Hassen (Indo-Asian News Service)
Durban, August 19

India has criticised Israel for its "arbitrary actions" in Gaza.

Addressing the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Committee on Palestine on Wednesday, Minister of State for External Affairs Rao Inderjit Singh also reaffirmed New Delhi's commitment to supporting the struggle of the Palestinian people.

In his intervention, Singh reiterated India's full support to the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people that he said had been a consistent tenet of India's foreign policy.

Singh commented on a number of issues in Palestine.

These included India's regret that the cycle of violence and killing of innocents continued between Palestinians and Israelis; the isolation and confinement of Yasser Arafat; Israel's arbitrary actions in Gaza that were not within the framework of the Road Map; and the frequent recourse to military action.............

3. Which group in India criticized Israel: the Brahman or the Untouchables?

Even though castes are outlawed, their tradition is well and alive in India.

Didn't you say yesterday you wanted not to aid them anymore if they didn't move ahead with the roadmap. Why the kneejerk over any momentum to do anything about it?

India doesn't have an obligation to be bigot free in order to criticize the Israeli GOVERNENTS actions. The Indian government doesn't burn brides, maintain the caste system as a legal entity or advocate antimuslim bias.

6. I can oppose Israel and oppose hypocricy at the same time.
I can criticize George W. Bush if he condemns religious extremism.

Given the status of Kashmir, I think India is not in a position to comment.

9. Pakistan is the one trying to take Kashmir
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 02:07 AM by Classical_Liberal
Kashmir is India's legal territory. The only way this is analogous is that the UN stupidly partitioned India into Muslim and Hindu sectors creating the religious ethnic mess there, just as it did by creating a Jewish State. In this case Pakistan is the one playing the role of Israel in trying to pry away Kashmir over its muslim majority. Both Muhatma Ghandhi and Neru Ghandhi warned that the partition of India's would create precisely that kind of ethnic violence.

7. many million muslims live in india
i doubt any hindu's are welcome in the islamic state of pakistan. india is a secular democracy and not a theocratic military dictatorship.

because of hostility, past wars and terrorism in india sponsored by pakistan, there is a good amount of anti-muslim feeling in india. in any event their position on the palestinean situation is quite reasonable, especially when you consider the very close relationship between india and israel.

and christians living in Pakistan - not many but they certainly exist.

Also anti-muslim feeling in India goes further back than partition and it certainly pre dates "terrorism in india sponsored by pakistan"

The current Indian government is a huge improvement on the BJP who were a bunch of Hindu supremacists, after the anti muslim violence that resulted in the deaths of at least 1000 muslims in Gujarat Vajpayee had this to say:

“Wherever there are Muslims, they do not want to live with others. Instead of living peacefully, they want to propagate their religion by creating terror in the minds of others.”

No nation is perfect they all have bigots, some of them violent, that doesn't mean they can not speak to problems in other nations.
