What strategic benefit does the US gain from its relationship with Israel?

I read Imperial Hubris and the author asked this question. What is the benefit to the US?

2. It's a symbiotic relationship.

They get: Protection, resources and permission to do pretty-much anything they want.

We get: It's the perfect racket! Our govt gives Israel money and they turn around and buy our military supplies. Supporting Israel is a great cover for subsidizing our own military-industrial complex.
Plus, it has the added bonus of appealing to certain voters.
