22 Years Later, Sabra and Shatila Remembered
22 Years Later, Sabra and Shatila Remembered
http://www.adc.org/index.php?id=2337

Washington DC, Sept 16-Today, September 16, marks 22 years since one of the bloodiest and most brutal massacres in recent history, the 1982 massacre of Palestinian refugees in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps.

Twenty two years ago, shortly after the Israeli army seized control of West Beirut, Lebanon, right wing Phalangist militia forces, under the direction of Israeli forces, made their way into the Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra and Shatila located on the outskirts of the city. Once in the camps the militias massacred hundreds of defenseless men, women and children.

<snip>

Then Defense Minister Ariel Sharon was also forced to resign after the Commission concluded that he bore personal responsibility for the massacre, and should never hold public office again. Sharon is now the Prime Minister of Israel.

To learn more, see the BBC's documentary on the Sabra and Shatila massacre and also the court case against Ariel Sharon:

2. Notice the silence in here, as well.
I guess the documented fact that Sharon murdered innocents doesn't fit into the pro-land-theft posters' worldview here.

I wonder how they deal with that cognitive dissonance?

3. In fairness I must say that the subject has been beaten
to death here many times, and there is little that reasonable
people dispute about it, or about Jabba's culpability in it.
I for one would be happy to see him in the Hague for it, along
with a number of other "world leaders", and I use that term
with a certain sarcasm.

If one is to forgo condemning each and every bombing of pizza
parlors etc., and I do, then it seems reasonable to forgo repetitive
condemnation of this and other atrocities committed by the other
side, too. It's all very well to call a spade a spade where these
things are concerned, but that in itself does little to allow the
children to get to school safely and people on both sides to pursue
their lives in peace.

I hope you won't take this amiss, I'm just pointing out that there
might be other reasons why this did not get much response, and I
offer my own views as an example.

4. It Would Be An Odd Diversion, My Friend
To compose an anniversary calender of noteable massacres for media commemoration: using only the last century, it would seem unlikely there is a single day that could not be marked as the anniversary of at least one such....

He has barely touched the surface.

It is, of course, a task beyond anyone....
