For the first time since it was formed at the end of 1987, Hamas has publicly admitted executing a member suspected of collaborating with Israel. The Iz a-Din al-Kassam brigades executed Hassan Mussalam, 18, and dumped his body in the Seja'ia neighborhood in Gaza.
After the killing the brigades published a broadsheet in which they took responsibility for the execution. They said Musallam had been implicated in the assassination of movement leader Ahmad Yassin, and in the attempted assassination of Dr. Mahmoud A-Zahar, one of the senior Hamas officials in the Gaza Strip.
"As we confront the occupation and settlers we know the enemy cannot harm us without the assistance of collaborators who serve as their eyes, and as a source of information, and who have a hand in the liquidation of the organization's fighters and leadership."
Before the present intifada, a secret arm of the Hamas called "Majd" killed Palestinians it believed to be collaborators with Israel, but the organization did not publicize this.
By contrast, Fatah has executed hundreds of alleged collaborators and dozens more are in PA jails, some under death sentences. A large number of victims were not collaborators, but were killed for a host of other reasons, including personal enmities.
