The 82nd Airborne Division anticipates another call to send soldiers to Afghanistan, a spokesman said Thursday.
"We have received a warning order to plan for a possible deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom," said Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Fletcher, a division spokesman. "We expect to receive a deployment order within the next 24 hours." Fletcher said he was not able to give details.
News reports say the division will send about 700 soldiers to Afghanistan to provide security for the Oct. 9 national elections. The battalion-size unit will stay 30 to 45 days, reports said.
Division officials announced Monday that about 3,500 soldiers will deploy to Afghanistan in the spring for a year. The soldiers will belong to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, which will be formed around the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The brigade-size unit could range from 2,500 to 5,000 soldiers, officials said.
Fox News on Thursday reported that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld signed a deployment order, which was sent out Wednesday.
