Maybe its because, when things get terribly grim, its time to lift the lid on the box and laugh your way out. Plastic bags are good for pooper-scooping, but if you've actually stepped in it, I'll take a good loonie to save face anyday.
You know, Gregory Bateson (or maybe Jane Belo) once sat in on a Balinese council preparing to consider a tribesman accused of a terrible crime. The members (men & women) were all sitting around a table cracking jokes (mostly off-color), laughing and otherwise having themselves a good time. When Bateson (or maybe it was Margaret Mead) inquired about why everyone was so frivolous, considering the purpose of the meeting, a councilmember turned and replied:
We're here to decide if this fellow should be exiled or not (a punishment equivalent to execution in their society). It would be a big mistake to do that to somebody just because we were in a bad mood, doncha think?
