Johnson is said to have turned to an aide and said "We have just lost the South for a generation"

The democratic party supports equal rights for gays because it is the right thing to do.

1. Tell them, it's not always easy to accept people who are different.

Give them one of the many speeches that have been given over the past 30 years to white churches in the south, talking about being accepting of others and how it's the Christ-like thing to do.

These African Americans are not making a religious decision about being gay any more than a white person in Mississippi would have been making a religious decision in order to support racial reform. They might have believed that God didn't accept "Negros," but they still believed in equality and justice and freedom for everyone, including true religious freedom. Even my racist Grandmother concedes that point.

Truly, there are many fine sermons that have been given on this topic that would resonate well.
