October Surprise in Reverse! Bush to Robertson: No casualties
"And I warned him about this war. I had deep misgivings about this war, deep misgivings. And I was trying to say, 'Mr. President, you had better prepare the American people for casualties.' "

Robertson said the president then told him, "Oh, no, we're not going to have any casualties."

CNN

Oh, My God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What an idiot!

This could hit the Bush Campaign like the 10 plagues on Eygpt and may split the GOP like the parting of the Red Sea!

The next headline could be about the BURNING _BUSH_!!!!!

Quo vadis Pat Robertson????

12. Here's why I say that
People give Bush a pass for not being very smart. They've accepted that and tend to look the other way if Bush just 'misspeaks'. I'm afraid that making a joke of it will have no effect when the Bush team attempts to spin it that way. If we make a serious case, especially to the military and their families, that the guy is actually dangerous I think we may sway some votes.

13. I dunno, I like the shame route on this one.
All his supporters know about his self-imposed ignorance.

But this is more than that, and we have a real opportunity with it. It's plain nuts. I'm just afraid that if we don't ridicule them with it I doubt it'll have much effect.

In any case, they did it to Dean for much less. FUCK them.

15. Exactly - there's so much here we can use
1. It shows Bush greatly underestimated the difficulty of winning the war.
2. It shows Bush's thought process and belief system is similar to a fundie nut like Robertson.
3. A wedge can be driven between Bush and Robertson and therefore Bush and the Christian Right.
4. Bush loses anyway you slice it.

21. Well let's parse "serious."
It is impossible for many people to "seriously" believe that God speaks to their leaders... however...

The Nazi's leadership thought it would be useful to convince their soldiers that Hitler did. They had initials indicating God was on their side caste into belt buckles worn by their soldiers. How serious was _THAT?_ Well pretty damned serious!

On the other hand, an argument between the followers of George Bush and the disciples of Pat Robertson over which leader God speaks to more truthfully is to be taken as seriously as arguing about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

I can think of NO democrat that would seriously support Robertson's political positions. Simply consider the things he has said about end times and the middle east, the nature of Islam, and the special economic gift God made to America because we are a "christian nation."

For progressive Democrats buying into Pat Robertson's rhetoric would be...serious.

And to show just how serious that _is_, I prefer to laugh out loud at the whole situation. The whole god-speak thingy is as phony as a six dollar and sixty-six cent bill.

I really think its funny. I'll laugh about this all day with people of like mind.

But I am not sure it's terribly useful at the level of the campaign.

Think seriously about blowback. Really trying to use it will tend to reinscribe the wobblies' beliefs that Democrats have no respect for God and religion.

Regardless of how stupid it is to think that a supreme being is engaged in guiding the American war effort or the 2004 election, that isn't an image we need to cultivate.

39. I agree.
Totally delusional, and the Divinely inspired duty thing is the last and most absurd justification for an unnecessary and illegal war.

But at the same time if you think the Mary Cheney remark disrupted the message, imagine what this could do.

All of _us_ know "Bush as the Sword of God" is frightening though absurd. But me thinks the other side has waxed their ears so as not to hear the sirens of truth.

29. Maybe and maybe not
National coverage of this story underscores a number of assumptions...

1) Democrats hate God

2) Bush and Robertson both believe God talks to them, though one of them may be a little hard of hearing.

3) Robertson heard God correctly on Iraq, consequently people should pay attention when Pat tells them what God thinks.

4) In this race Robertson has never backed anyone but Bush and in the next few weeks Pat "The Mouthpiece of God" is going to be on television, radio, and in public appearances telling somewhat wobbly christians to "Do God's work and vote for Bush"

I don't want to feed that story. I'd rather laugh as it sinks into the abyss.

Looks like robertson's Lord had a better idea about it than bush's walkie talkie.

But robertson's Lord should also tell him that bush is false prophet and shouldn't be any where NEAR our White House tellin' his LIES to the American People!

"You remember Mark Twain said, 'He looks like a contented Christian with four aces.' I mean he was just sitting there like, 'I'm on top of the world,' " Robertson said on the CNN show, "Paula Zahn Now."

14. THIS IS THE BEST!!!! Bwhahahahahahahahahhahahahahah!!!!
Eating their own:

--snip--

Robertson, the televangelist who sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1988, said he wishes Bush would admit to mistakes made.

"I mean, the Lord told me it was going to be A, a disaster, and B, messy," Robertson said. "I warned him about casualties."

More than 1,100 U.S. troops have died in Iraq and another 8,000 troops have been wounded in the ongoing campaign, with the casualty toll significantly increasing in the last six months as the insurgency there has deepened.

Asked why Bush has refused to admit to mistakes on Iraq, Robertson said, "I don't know this politics game. You know, you can never say you were wrong because the opposition grabs onto it: 'See, he admitted he screwed up.' "

mad little puppet according to the story. I swear by the goddess, the landscape of the Right becomes more like a Dali painting everyday, while they try to turn the rest of the earth into Bosch.

Someone please deconstruct for me Robertson's motives here, putting out this clear evidence of madness while still maintaining support. Is he hoping to become Grand Inquisitor in the new world order?

Because during the last debate, Bush wouldn't own up to the fact that he wants to see Roe overturned. You know that caused the fundies to wobble. They wanted to their deity incarnate, "decisive and steadfast" Bush take a clear side on Roe. He clearly didn't. Now he's getting castigated by the one issue anti-choicers who comprise his base. He still has the people who hate gays on board, but some of them may fall off the wagon because of Mary Cheney. Sweet!

42. This is a P. Buchanan type of "help" tho'
... because ... "Even as Robertson criticized Bush for downplaying the potential dangers of the Iraq war, he heaped praise on Bush, saying he believes the president will win the election and that "the blessing of heaven is on Bush."

"Even if he stumbles and messes up -- and he's had his share of stumbles and gaffes -- I just think God's blessing is on him," Robertson said.

So -- like Buchanan -- despite what Bush does, he's still the "chosen one."

Edited on Wed Oct-20-04 09:25 AM by theHandpuppet
Seriously, this bespeaks a Bush who is seriously, mentally ill. A dangerously paranoid psychotic totally out of touch with reality but with immense power and with what he, in his own little delusional world, believes is the God-appointed right to wield the sword against "evildoers". No one can tell me that this (Bush's mental state) isn't common knowledge in Capital Hill circles, and how dare anyone who calls themselves a true patriot of America support this crazoid.

I suppose that's what outrages me most about this -- not so much that Bush is nuts, because anyone with two brain cells to rub together could see that -- but that there are so many so-called "patriots" on Capital Hill that also know this but will put the benefit of their party above the good of their country. To them it doesn't matter how many lives are lost. Shame on them all, for it is they who, above all, are traitors to their own country.
