I believe the first step is to correctly diagnose their problem as part of global epidemic of religionism. They have all the characteristics of cults. If that's true, then they will need to be deprogrammed, no easy task.
Since there is no such thing as "unnatural", we should determine how they slipped off into such aberrant or fantasy based modes of thought. Why would perfectly healthy people wander off into a world view that is based on "voodoo", totally out of touch with obvious reality?
People are attracted to religion for many different reasons, too many for us to grasp. However, if we could focus on the more obvious reasons, perhaps there may be ways to make some progress.
This forum is no place to attempt to "write a book". For the sake of brevity, let me propose that one of the "Trojan horses" that religion uses to capture the minds of it's victims is the fallacy that one's spirituality can only be explored through the auspices of organized religion. All people are naturally in search of their spiritual nature and as they follow that quest, they are easily conned into believing the the Church offers the only road to attainment.
My fellow poster, you are correct in your assessment that religious fundamentalism is the problem. Somehow we need to counter that threat to civilization. What are your thoughts as to how we could do this?
