I have the same low-grade headache I've had since 8:00 PM last night. First let me say, that I have little hope that we are somehow going to find 200,000 votes in Ohio and turn this ship around. How glorious that would be, but let's live in the real world.
But we have to accept some hard truths. First of all the days of FDR, JFK, and LBJ are over. We are a minority party and need to come to terms with that before we can re-establish ourselves as a party that can win on a national level.
Forget the Presidential election, the Senate, House, and Governor races should point out that being a Democrat is positively radioactive in a far too many states. There are a few anamolies that Bayh, but he's more right-wing than Bush 41.
Even places where it was thought that we were making inroads turned out to be false hope. Virginia? Please. It was Bush in a walk. West Virginia is now a deeply red state. Missouri is trending in an alarming direction.
The point is, the Republicans now start with about 24 states (including a huge one in Texas) in their pocket at the beginning of every election. We start with about 13. In other words, we have to be perfect in the remaining states just to stay competitive. And we have to pray that Pennsylvania (home of Rick Freaking Santorum) stays with us.
And the states where we win are closer than the states where we lose. Michigan (51-48) turning Republican or VA (54-46) or NC (56-43) turning to the Dems.
The first hint of this trouble was 1994. We should have realized our situation in 2000 but the Florida mess gave us hope. Now, it should be clear. We are not in as bad as shape as Republicans in 1964, but we need to re-establish our Party as they did.
I have no idea how to do this by the way, but I've been drunk for two days.
